The University of Leeds was founded in1904 but its origins go back to the nineteenth century with the founding ofthe Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and then the Yorkshire College of Sciencein 1874.

In 1831 a Group of young men establishedthe Leeds School of Medicine which meant that medical students no longer had togo to Scotland London or overseas to study.

The Yorkshire College of Science wasfounded around 40 years later largely as a result of concerns by the wool andtextile industries that the rapid development of new technologies in Europeposed a threat to the local cloth trade.

Our planet andits population face unprecedented challenges including climate change economicinstability inequality poverty refugee crises and more recently theCOVID-19 pandemic..

The impact ofthese challenges and how we address them varies greatly across nations. TheUnited Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as zero hunger good health and wellbeing and gender equality are more difficult to reach forlow and middle income countries which are mainly in the Global South and oftenhave the least resources. And in the generally more affluent Global North there is great disparity in the impact of these issues within and acrosspopulations.

To positivelyshape our world the University of Leeds will place itself at the heart of a globalcommunity combining research and innovation student education and knowledgeexchange.

We will support asmall number of flagship centres and institutes that work across disciplinary institutional and geographical boundaries to drive these activities. This willempower us to address global challenges.
