Seattle ─ A Classy City
Each year thousands of people are enchanted by the inviting ambiance of Seattle. Located in Washington the North western most state in the US the city provides easy access to Canada and the Pacific Ocean.
Seattle has a reputation for its classiness. This impression began some 150 years ago in the early years of the city. At this time Seattle was a gathering place for many unmarried men traveling to the American frontier. All of these men in one location caused a bit of a crisis in that Seattle lacked teachers for the children and eligible wives for the bachelors. In an effort to draw educated women to his city Asa Mercer a university president went east to recruit educated women promising them good jobs at an excellent salary. The 11 women became known as the Mercer Maidens. These brave "maidens" would not only pave the way for other educated women but also set the educational standards for the area.
These days Seattle's reputation isn't based so much on its educated residents but on the corporations that call it home. In 1971 Starbucks the world's biggest coffee-shop chain started out as a little stall in Seattle's Pike Place Market. Seattle wouldn't be Seattle without the influence of the Microsoft Corporation. This company as well as its founder billionaire Bill Gates was born and raised in the surrounding area.
Seattle is a city that has its feet firmly planted in the past but that is always looking towards the future. It's these attributes that make Seattle the emerald city of the United States.
Picture-perfect Holland
A visit to Holland is like stepping into the pages of a fairy tale. Fields of flowers small wooden bridges long canals and windmills on hilltops may seem as if they are from a child's book but they are very much present in the Dutch landscape of today.
One of the most exciting and colorful attractions of Holland is the flower festival at Keukenhof. Started in 1949 the festival takes place over 77 acres of land. Tulips provide the major theme to the event blending with picturesque streams and winding paths.
Another attraction for visitors to Holland is the windmills. Though mainly a tourist attraction nowadays windmills were a vital part of the Dutch way of life for centuries. Windmills didn't originate in Holland but the Dutch were the first to make an industry out of them. Springing up as early as 1274 windmills were used to produce power drain waterlogged flatlands grind corn and aid in the production of paper and oil. To see them in action visit Zaanse Schans. This open-air conservation area contains five windmills attracting thousands of visitors each year.
The country is renowned for its unique wooden clogs or "klompen " as they are called in Dutch. They were an invention of necessity allowing people to walk on the muddy earth after water was drained from parts of Holland in the 13th century. These rather large and unsightly shoes are still in use by Dutch farmers and gardeners today. Whether you're going for the clogs tulips windmills or the picture-perfect landscapes a trip to Holland will be an adventure that leaves a lasting impression.
