Why do we like the classic Chinese work "Journey to the West"?
The influence of literature on contemporary society is beyond doubt and writers can portray the genuine society in their literary works. Some novels are mirrors of society helping us to better understand our own lives. The works that are rich in humanistic spirit also help people to understand each other. We can begin to understand how others think by listening to what they have to sayterature is very important because through the medium of books it fosters dialogue among people in a world that increasingly helps every reader to learn experience and grow.
Having studied comparative literature since high school I found that Chinese literature has had a huge impact on universal literature.
As Goethe said art belongs to humanity and everything one knows in art or science is the effort of all the people before us. China’s literary classics are rich in content and it remains a challenge to develop our understanding of Chinese culture through literature.
For example the first and my favorite Chinese novel that I read was the well-known "Journey to the West". The historically proven Xuanzang's epic journey to obtain the scriptures is considered the source of inspiration for "Journey to the West" which has been a popular theme in novels since the end of the Tang Dynasty. Journey to the West is admired for its caustic critique of civilization and bureaucracy its metaphorical depiction of human effort and endurance and for the novel's humor and spirit of adventure.
The origins and further analysis of good social criticism in Journey to the West focus on the so-called mass society. Modern scholars use this idea to describe the world of mass production and consumerism that together lead to the alienation of the individual. I learned a lot of lessons like how to work hard for what you want how to respect those around you whether they are stronger than you or not how to keep your promises how to always be humble everything is possible for humanity.
I like to compare this book with “Around the World in Eighty Days” because the French writer Jules Verne also tells the journey of an Englishman and his servants who set on a journey around the world. Their purpose is to demonstrate that society has evolved to the point where people can actually travel around the world using trains cars and ships. In a way this book can be compared to “Journey to the West” because both spiritual enlightenment and scientific enlightenment are both final purposes for everyone and in the end everyone wants to reach the final destination and gain enlightenment.
Jules Verne presents a world of cultural fusion where each country has its own rules and cultural values aspects that the British traveler encounter for the first time. At the end of the trip he felt that he didn't know enough about the world but he found that the key to a perfectly balanced world is always trying to be a better person understanding that every culture is unique seeing that every country is important playing a role in the global balance.
Whether you like the charismatic monkey king or the British aristocrat these two stories tell us that we should endure hardships difficult situations and moments when we don't know what to do but we must seize the opportunity to overcome them. Friends are there to help us and a good team is all you need to make your dreams come true.
Today's society is built on relationships and I believe that's why the Chinese are able to achieve so much. Not everyone is Monkey King but everyone plays their part in building a great and beautiful country. There are many adaptations of “Journey to the West” such as movies and TV series but the most important thing is that everyone should read the original book carefully because it not only shows the true nature of the human spirit but also shows the traditional Chinese culture and conveys a valuable spirit of exploration and creativity. It also taught me that life is actually the adventure we all have. This may be the reason why we like the classic Chinese literature "Journey to the West".
