Cheating Isn't Winning
掌握“美式发音”技巧,一个句子就GO了!
Leo Durocher was a tough American professional baseball player and manager who wasn't above (不惜) breaking a few rules if it meant winning a game. He was famous for saying "Nice guys finish last."
There seems to have been a lot of "Leo Durochers" running in Shenzhen's half- marathon race last month. Two hundred and fifty-eight runners were caught cheating. Most of the cheaters decided to get to the finish line of the 21-kilometer race a little quicker by taking a short cut (抄近道). Unfortunately for them they were caught on camera. These "not-so-nice" guys were disqualified and banned from running in the race for two years.
What happened in Shenzhen was disgraceful but we shouldn't really be shocked. At the Olympic Games we've gotten used to seeing athletes lose their medals because they used performance-enhancing drugs. And the Chinese football league had problems a few years ago with referees (裁判) and players taking bribes (受贿) to affect the outcome of games. For some people perhaps too many people the result not individual effort and fair-play is all that matters — and not only in sports.
In business there was the melamine (三聚氰胺) scandal (丑闻) in 2008 where a company tried to increase its profits by adding a poisonous chemical to its baby formula (婴儿奶粉). As a result tens of thousands of children fell victim to the tainted (受污染的) milk powder. And last year there was the vaccine (疫苗) scandal in Shandong where a woman and her daughter made huge profits by buying old useless vaccines repackaging them and then selling them to hospitals. No one died but thousands were left vulnerable (易患……病的) to disease.
This "nice-guys-finish-last" attitude can also be seen in education. Because competition is so intense some parents bribe school officials to get their children into good primary schools. Some students cheat on the college entrance exam to get into a good university. After graduation they may lie on their resumes (简历) to get a good job.
Everyone wants to win and everyone wants to succeed. But sports business education and society in general can only function if people play by the rules. Otherwise there is just chaos. And it's not good for your individual soul either. Can you really be proud of an accomplishment if you know you have cheated? Sadly for some people the answer is yes. I hope you are not one of them. You can be better than a Leo Durocher.
教案
PRE-READING
1. How much do you know about the marathon race? Do you want to run a marathon if possible?
Note: The marathon is a long-distance race completed by running walking or a run/walk strategy. The marathon has an official distance of 42.195 kilometres. The name "Marathon" comes from the legend of Philippides or Pheidippides a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens (雅典) to announce that the Persians (波斯人) had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon.
2. Have you heard the news about the massive cheating behavior in Shenzhen's half-marathon race last month? What do you think of this behavior?
Note: A total of 258 runners were caught cheating during the race. Among them 237 runners took shortcuts. Organizers say they would have run two or three kilometers less than the full 21-kilometre distance.

Sentences
1. Leo Durocher was a tough American professional baseball player and manager who① wasn't above② breaking a few rules if③ it meant winning a game.
