(Text 1)M: Did the flight for Hong Kong leave ten minutes ago?
W: That’s right. It’s now a quarter after eleven.
(Text 2)M: Charles enjoyed his two-week drive through South China.
W: Yes he said that he saw much more than he would have traveling by bus or train.
(Text 3)M: What’s the matter Anne? Do you have a problem?
W: Yes I have the chance to get another job and I don’t know what to do.
M: If it’s a better job than your present one take it.
(Text 4)W: Good afternoon.
M: Good afternoon. I have a table for two under the name of Jack.
W: Yes sir. This way please.
(Text 5)W: It’s surprising that David came out of the air-crash alive.
M: That’s true. The plane crashed into the mountain and was completely destroyed.
W: It’s terrible to have such a crash.
(Text 6)M: Hello Mona this is Peter.
W: Hi Peter. What can I do for you?
M:I need directions on how to get to the football stadium.
W: Oh it’s easy to find. First go south on Highway 18 for 5 miles until you come to a large KFC. Turn left at the KFC and continue for a few miles more and you will come to the stadium. There are plenty of signs once you pass the KFC and they will take you right to the stadium.
M: Do you think the stadium will be very crowded?
W: Well the radio announced the tickets for this game had been sold out. That means you should leave about an hour before the game starts.
M: Thank you very much. I’ll take your advice.
(Text 7)M: What a terrible story! A couple was sailing their boat from Hawaii to Mexico. While they were crossing the Pacific their boat hit a whale and sank!
W: Is that true? What happened to the whale?
M: It doesn’t say. Oh and here’s another one. A guy in Los Angeles was robbing a bank. But as he was escaping he got caught in the revolving door.
W:I guess it was his first bank robbery!
M: Yeah. Oh and listen to this. Some guy got locked out of his house so he tried to get in through the chimney.
W: Don’t tell me! He got stuck in the chimney!
M: Exactly. And he was still trying to get out two days later when the police rescued him.
(Text 8)W: Which would you like to book Chinese food or Japanese food Sir?
M:I want to book a table for a Chinese dinner the day after tomorrow. Could you manage it for me?
W: Certainly. But at what time?
M: At five o’clock. I’m afraid we’ll come a little late after five.
W: For how many guests?
M: About ten. I have no idea how much it costs. What’s the price?
W: The price of a Chinese table of dishes ranges from $100 to $500 not including drinks.
M:I prefer the highest price.
W: Very good. Would you like to have a look at the menu?
M: No I’ll leave it all to you. In short we would like to have typical Chinese food.
W: No problem.
(Text 9)M: When do you want to leave for that seaside town Martha?
W: I’m not sure yet but maybe we should leave Friday after work. It’s a long drive but I’d rather get there late Friday than midday Saturday. We have three days off this time after all.
M: How long is it?
W: Five or six hours.
M: Say you leave at 4:30 right after work and you’ll be there around nine or ten.
W:I suppose so. And we could still have a good night’s sleep.
M: What are you going to take?
W: Mostly shorts and T- shirts.
M: You don’t think it’s a bit cold at night at the seaside?
W: Maybe. I’m going to take a sweater or a light coat just in case.
M: Hope you have a good time there.
(Text 10)M: It’s that time of year again. It’s award show season. No I’m not talking about the Nobel Prizes. I’m talking about the entertainment awards. Many stars get together at award ceremonies and the winners are announced. My favorites are the Emmy Awards for television the Academy Awards for the movies and the Grammy Awards for records. But I’m up for almost any award show—the Golden Globes the SAG Awards even the People’s Choice Awards.
For some people the best part of watching the award shows is the pre-show. The stars arrive on the red carpet and are interviewed. Sometimes what they are wearing made by the top designers and jewelers gets more attention than anything they say. But for me the most exciting part is when the winners are announced and you never know what will come out of their mouths when they win—or better yet—when they lose.
