Trends. They're everywhere and they are inescapable. Princess or pauper (贫民) there is a constant overshadowing presence trying to dictate how you live your life — and perhaps the life of your pets as well.

Man's best friends dogs are often referred to as "too good for us." They help blind people see find dangerous explosives and show us unconditional love. My most recent observation of canine (犬类的) loyalty was a video depicting a sleeping man being protected by his dog who will not allow anyone to approach his owner for fear of wrongdoing.

So what have we done in return for their kindness? It turns out that throughout our long love affair with dogs we have somehow mistreated them!

I'm not talking about dog meat or animal testing. What annoys me is our current obsession with "trendy" dogs. Dogs are no longer kept purely for love and companionship. Think to yourself: Have you ever seen a perfectly groomed (梳毛) dog wearing an outfit? Now consider: Is this form of ownership more about love and companionship or more about social media presence and fashion? How many dog owners know that their pets don't need to wear clothes or be sheared (剪毛)? They can regulate their own temperature.

Over the years we have also changed the genetic (基因的) makeup of certain dog breeds in order to make our lovely companions even "cuter" or more suited to dog shows. The most prominent example of this comes in the form of the pug (哈巴狗) the lovable yapping (汪汪乱叫的) heel-biter that floods our social media. This breed is now a modification (改型) of the Chinese "happa" dog. These dogs have been bred to have various physical features. These changes however cause modern-day pugs a variety of health problems including heart defects (缺陷) difficulty breathing high blood pressure and heat exhaustion. Most worryingly some dogs are helplessly abandoned on the streets when their owners are fed up with the "beauty" trend and the vet's bills.

All dogs will show you the same loyalty and love given the opportunity so why do we spend money on dogs that adhere to superficial (表面的) beauty standards which may cause the animals to suffer instead of adopting one that badly needs a loving home? Destructive trends are a tricky thing to break but as the saying goes little drops of water make a mighty ocean.

With the knowledge that our bond with animals should be unconditional when someone you know considers buying instead of adopting or keeping a puppy just because of a slight interest in a "beauty" trend on social media ask yourself: How can I share the wisdom I have and help break this cycle?

As the author mentioned the genetic changes we've made to certain dog breeds have caused them to suffer from a variety of health problems. The pictures on the right show the problems that bulldogs and pugs suffer. Work in groups and find out what health problems other "modified" dog breeds face. Make a class poster based on your research findings and the message you want to spread.
