这几日,重读一些英文诗歌。大约不论中文英文,一个人的品味总是类似,我的水平有限,不喜欢费尽周折去思考,去格物致知,只喜欢文字简单婉约的,易懂,却又深情款款的,或者哲思隽永的。中文如《古诗十九首》、《乐府诗集》,哪天有空,写几篇关于那些古老诗歌里的动人故事的文章。英文,便如今日要说的Robert Frost 的 the road not taken。
这首诗短而著名。可是像这样的大雪天,像这样人到中年的年龄,轻轻读起,别有滋味——因为它会让你想起过往,想起过去的这半生,想起自己的选择,而这些选择,其实就是你的命运。
这首诗是这样的:
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler
long I stood And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrown.
Then took the other as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should even come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood and I---
I took the one less traveled by

未选择的路
黄色的树林里分出两条路,
可惜我不能同时去涉足,
我在那路口久久伫立,
我向着一条路极目望去,
直到它消失在丛林深处。
但我却选了另外一条路,
它荒草萋萋,十分幽寂,
显得更诱人、更美丽,
虽然在这两条小路上,
都很少留下旅人的足迹,
虽然那天清晨落叶满地,
两条路都未经脚印污染。
呵,留下一条路等改日再见!
但我知道路径延绵无尽头,
恐怕我难以再回返。
也许多少年后在某个地方,
我将轻声叹息把往事回顾,
一片树林里分出两条路,
而我选了人迹更少的一条,
从此决定了我一生的道路。
译文如同原文一样,开端风景如画,树叶已黄,依然莽莽苍苍,树林深处分出两条路,各分西东。到底走哪条路,我自踌躇,都是未知,只能按照当时的感觉去选择,选了那条貌似更美的,芳草萋萋的路。然而,却再也无缘窥见另一条路的芳踪,尽管,也许它有更好的景致。
到了人生的中途,当你已经走过一条漫漫长路,其中酸甜苦辣已经尝够。有没有想过,那青葱的华年,如果选择的是另外一条路,另外一个人,生活是不是非常不同,人生是美还是痛?
有些事情不可再回头,有些选择一念间铸就。难就难在,其实当初,自己无法预见未来,却不得不做出选择,一旦选择,便不得不往前走。
一条路芳草萋萋,一条路花满枝头。
也许选择哪一条,都会忍不住在某个时候,去想如果当初走的是另外一条路,该是一番什么样的境遇和景致,虽然已经难以回头,虽然即便回头,你的选择依旧。
一个人一生面临很多次这样的选择,当你回头,身后已是一条长长的路。
而你的命运已经铸就。
