英语小故事一:A PIGEON(鸽子)

A pigeon oppressed by excessive thirst saw a goblet of water painted on a signboard. Not supposing it to be only a picture she flew towards it with a loud whir and unwittingly dashed against the signboard jarring herself terribly. Having broken her wings by the blow she fell to the ground and was caught by one of the bystanders.

Moral:Zeal should not outrun discretion.

一只鸽子口渴得很难受,看见画板上画着一只水杯。她并不以为那只是一幅画,而是发出一声响亮的呼噜声,朝画飞去,无意中撞在了招牌上,把自己撞得很不稳。她的翅膀被风吹断了,摔在地上,被一个旁观者抓住。

英语小故事三:The Bat and the Weasels(蝙蝠与黄鼠狼)

Abat who fell upon the ground and was caught by a Weasel pleaded to be spared his life. The Weasel refused saying that he was by nature the enemy of all birds. The Bat assured him that he was not a bird but a mouse and thus was set free. Shortly afterwards the Bat again fell to the ground and was caught by another Weasel whom he likewise entreated not to eat him. The Weasel said that he had a special hostility to mice. The Bat assured him that he was not a mouse but a bat and thus a second time escaped.

Moral:It is wise to turn circumstances to good account.

英语小故事四:The Ass and the Grasshopper(驴子与蚱蜢)

An ass having heard some Grasshoppers chirping was highly enchanted; and desiring to possess the same charms of melody demanded what sort of food they lived on to give them such beautiful voices. They replied "The dew." The Ass resolved that he would live only upon dew and in a short time died of hunger.

Moral:People should not expect anything out of proportion.

驴子听见蚱蜢唱歌,被美妙动听的歌声所打动,自己也想能发出同样悦耳动听的声音,便 羡慕地问他们吃些什么,才能发出如此美妙的声音来。蚱蜢答道:“吃露水。”驴子便也只吃露水,没多久就饿死了。

英语小故事五:The Dog and the Shadow(狗和影子)

It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out dropped into the water and was never seen more.

Moral:Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.

一只狗嘴里衔着一块肉,走过一条河上面的桥,看见他自己在水里的影子,以为是另一只狗,那时狗衔着的肉,比他自己的还要大一倍。因此他仍掉自己的那一块,狠狠地扑向那只狗,想夺到那一块较大的肉。结果两头都落了空,因为他想要抓取在水中的那一块,只不过是一个影子,而原来的那一块,也被水冲走了。

寓意:谨记,切莫因追逐幻影而丢失已有的东西

英语小故事六:Apple(苹果)

A man was going to the house of some rich person. As he went along the road he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. He said "I do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat." Then he took the apples and threw them away into the dust.

He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said "I cannot go to the rich man's house today for I cannot get over the river."

He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.

Moral:Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.

英语小故事八:The lion in love(恋爱中的狮子)

A lion once fell in love with a beautiful girl so he went to her parents and asked them to marry her to him.The old parents did not know what to say. They did not like the idea of giving their daughter to the lion but they did not want to enrage the king of beasts. At last the father said "We are glad to marry our daughter to you but we fear that you might possibly hurt her. So if you remove your claws and teeth we will give her to you."The lion loved the girl very much so he trimmed his claws and took out his big teeth. When he came to the parents again they simply laughed in his face and beat him out of their house.

Moral:Some people easily believe what others say abandon their own strengths and are easily defeated by those who were afraid of them.

英语小故事九:Hercules and Pallas(赫尔克里斯与雅典娜)

When Hercules was walking in the forest he saw a ball lying on the ground. He kicked it because it blocked his way.To his surprise the ball did not roll away but grew much bigger than before. So he kicked it again much harder.The harder he kicked the bigger the ball grew. At last it completely filled up the road.Pallas then appeared. "Stop Hercules " she said. "Stop kicking. The ball’s name is Strife.Let it alone and it will soon become small again." 

Moral: life requires peaceful coexistence and fights and confrontations often do more harm than good.

The hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have never been beaten " he said "when I run at full speed no one is faster than me." The tortoise said quietly "I will race with you." "That is a good joke " said the hare. "I could dance around you the whole way."The race started. The hare darted almost out of sight at once. He soon stopped and lay down to have a nap.The tortoise plodded on and on. When the hare awoke from his nap he saw the tortoise was near the finish line and that he had lost the race.

Moral: pride goes before a fall. Only by persevering can we achieve our goals.
