Higher temperatures will shrink supply of processing tomatoes in key regions in the next few decades with the US Italy and China expected to decline 6% by 2050 according to an academic study published in Nature Food.

It costs around $4 800 an acre to grow and harvest a tomato crop these days compared with $2 800 a decade ago according to Rick Blankenship vice president of farming operations. Most of the increases have been in the last two years.

最后一起来学习有关tomato的有趣表达吧。

1. hot tomato

hot 是“辣”，tomato 是“番茄”，但 hot tomato 可不是“辣番茄”哦。

hot tomato 指的是有魅力、有吸引力的女性（an attractive female），但要注意这是俚语（slang），所以不建议在正式场合使用哦。

2. rotten tomato

这也不是指字面上“烂番茄”的意思。而是形容特别不受欢迎的人或物（An especially repellent undesirable or unpleasant person or thing）。

Tom's always been a rotten tomato though. Even in school he was the kid who went out of his way to cause trouble for others.

汤姆一直不受欢迎。即使在学校里，他也是那个净给别人制造麻烦的小孩。

3. tomayto tomahto

这个俚语的来源很有意思。tomato这个词在美式英语中读作tomayto /təˈmeɪtoʊ/ 在英式英语中又读作tomahto /təˈmɑːtəʊ/。

英式和美式的这两个读音有细小的差别，但都是指的tomato这个词，所以就用这个俚语来指代“细微的、可忽略的差别”。
