北京交通大学前身是1896年创建的北京铁路管理传习所，历经交通部交通传习所、北京铁路管理学校、北京邮电学校时期，1921年与上海工业专门学校、唐山工业专门学校合并组建交通大学，1923年更名为北京交通大学，1970年恢复使用“北方交通大学”校名，1981年成为中国首批博士、硕士、学士学位授予单位，2003年恢复使用“北京交通大学”校名。

Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) formerly known as Beijing Railway Management School founded in 1896 went through the period of the Ministry of Communications Communication Communication School Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing School of Posts and Telecommunications. In 1921 it merged with Shanghai Technical School and Tangshan Technical School to form Jiaotong University. In 1923 it was renamed Beijing Jiaotong University. In 1970 it resumed its use of the name of "North Jiaotong University". In 1981 it became one of China's first batch of institutions granting doctor's master's and bachelor's degrees. In 2003 it resumed its use of the name of "Beijing Jiaotong University".
