Sky of Chinese Literature
By Angela 北京四中

The night falls and stars shine brightly in the pitch-black sky. It is the sky of Chinese literature. Each glittering star stands for a person who wrote poems and articles that fascinate us.
Among clusters of stars three of them catch my eyes.
The first one is Qu Yuan a poet in the Warring State period. Qu Yuan was famous for his great poem "Li Sao" (Encountering Sorrow). He was not only an eminent romantic litterateur but a statesman as well. He was regarded as the first patriotic poet all through Chinese history. The Dragon Boat Festival that we all knew well is to commemorate him for he committed suicide after he found out that his country failed another battle and there was no hope left.
The second star is Li Bai of Tang Dynasty. He is the first poet most Chinese kids remember. Li Bai had been referred to as "the Immortal Poet." It is said that he loved to drink so much that his inspirations only jumped out after he was drunk. He has left tons of beautiful poems for us.
And the third star is Su Shi. I admire him in every aspect. This legendary litterateur was a painter poet and calligrapher in Song Dynasty. He was good at painting rocks bamboos and woods for he found precious spirit in their natural state. Su Shi's whole family was so intelligent and diligent that they all became eminent poets.
But in my opinion the moon in the sky to outshine all stars is Sima Qian a great historian of the Western Han Dynasty who had written wrote the book " Records of the Grand Historian." This poor man was sent to jail because of having spoken the words that the empire doesn't like to hear. In prison he had been treated poorly but he still didn't forget to achieve his father's wish. Therefore he spent years in the jail and finished writing the book which remains a primary factor in studying Chinese history. Not only are the contents invaluable but the spirit and the shame and pain behind the book are priceless as well.
This is the sky of Chinese literature in my eyes. A sky composed of a myriad of twinkling stars.
The stars in Chinese literature
北京四中 YF WU
The second when we were given birth to this world we were meant to be a member of the wide group called' literature.' It is a concept not unfamiliar to us for we have been learning it since kindergarten. As a Chinese we love our national literature just like other peoples all over the world do. I would like to refer to the whole Chinese literature history as a solar system and of course there are plenty of bright stars in it which are all the poets that we know.
Speaking of the shiniest star the first one I thought about was Yuan Qu. The most important reason is that he was the first of the greatest patriotism poets. As an insightful man at that feudal period it is tough for him to show his personal view but on the contrary he did. He impressed me by his courage. On the other hand he did create lots of masterpieces. ‘ Li Sao' and ‘ Chu Ci' must have been the best-known ones that I love most. Different sayings various views but always the same theme and we are always able to recognize his unique style.
I would like to rank Qingzhao Li the second brightest star. She was once my dream of Chinese literature and she guided me to enter this fabulous world. As we all know she is the first female poet of Ci,a type of lyric poetry. I consider she must have had a tremendous courage to push her in this great situation. In the tradition of women in Chinese history they should be the weak cowards but in Qing Zhao Li's Ci she showed an unbelievable strength and courage among all the female poets. All of us have to admit her strong potential power in her small frame.
The third shiny star which is also really colossal and smart must have been in honor of Qian Sima. He has a diversity of knowledge. He was a man of intelligence and firmness of will. The tremendous work he wrote for abut 560 000 words has already become the topic of thousands of Chinese literature study. What a talented man he is!
What a sky lit by those stars we live under!
Sky of Chinese Literature
Oscar Junior 中关村二小
Imagine the literature of China to be the sky at night those Chinese who have made some notable historical events will be the stars that are illuminating the whole solar system.
In my opinion the third most essential star must be Qu Yuan because of his brilliant article Li Sao,a well-known mythology poem which recounts the poet’s spirit of righteousness & the theory of Ziran which is known to the traditional Chinese Taoism as the concept of spontaneous freedom from care.
The second major star is Du Fu for his works are among the most influential poems so he’s frequently called ‘poem-historian’ & ‘poem-Sage.' Most of his poems are highly concerned about natural elements such as rural scenes climate diversification and seasonal state etc.
The sun as I believe should be the ancient philosopher Lao-Tzu (also Laozi) for one of his classic masterwork Tao Te Ching had once powerfully astounded the entire world. Although there are still a few unsolved issues about the exact date & authorship of the text which are debated by experts Tao Te Ching is simply referred to as 'The Pro-Bible.' Translated into more than 29 languages it has given those Western countries a tremendous opportunity for their literary & philosophy development.
These examples reflect the literary level nowadays. While the stars in the sky gradually began to fade we should more like to repaint the magnificent colorful sky as it was.
The Sky of Chinese Literature
by ZL Yi (北京八中高一)
We had known about the sky of Russian literature; then we assumed the same environment in China. Now I'd like to share my opinion.
First I think the position of Pushkin equals to Yuan Qu. Both of them were pioneers of romantic poetry. We know Yuan Qu had metaphor system of his own which has been studied by a host of scholars in which the fragrant flowers stood for virtues Yuan Qu's literary works has been well-acclaimed; his loyalty to his country is also attracting us. His style impacted writing format which later became Seven-character poetry of Tang Dynasty.
The second place I want to give to Shi Su. The first reason is he was not only good at the poetry of Tang but promoted Cí Poetry of the Song Dynasty to the government from marketplace. In his articles we can only see his wisdom and optimism despite his rough life. We know the two highest peaks are Shi Su and Qiji Xin but I chose Shi Su in the end because Xin's works are mainly of the herculean aspirations difficult to fulfill and all of them had a similar purpose. If I could add one more place I would pick Qiji Xin.
And another light is from Lu Xun. He has made a plenty of contributions to both China and Chinese literature. When he was young his dream was to be a doctor but then he found that only rescuing people's health can't save China so he gave up his dream and became a writer. Lu Xun is a pioneer for a new style of writing is only attempted by the bravest and wisest. He is the first writer in China using vernacular to write novels. His articles had the same effect: to criticize current politics by describing numbed people in the society. He is a giant but he is also among us. His articles are not only dazzling for a short period but also teaching us and will inspire coming generation as well.
At last I have to choose one to be the sun and I want to give this place to ordinary people. The real literature belongs to not only the literati but also everyday people. And there is lots of truth in this idea. We know the Book of Songs which is said to be edited by Confucius but every poem of the book is collected from ordinary people. Some of them show people's Labor scene some of them is written by individuals and used like songs. What's more the poetry of the Song Dynasty also came from all walks of people.
That is my opinion but as a matter of fact history of Chinese literature can't be described by only these people. Like Bai Li or Fu Du they were also great poets but I can't give places for them. Maybe three stars and one sun to describe is not right we should use starry sky in which everyone stands for a little star and there are also plenty of stars we haven't found till now.
