The People

There are about 4.5 million Chinese immigrants and their descendants living in the United States today. The first Chinese-Americans came to America as gold miners during the Qing dynasty. In 1850 there were only 500 Chinese laborers working in the gold mines in California. By 1882 there were 300 000 immigrants from China. Chinese laborers played a very important role in railway construction in California.

In 1882 the U.S. Congress passeed the Chinese Exclusion Act stopping Chinese immigration for ten years. In 1902 Congress decided to stop immigration from China for an indefinite period. This Act was cancelled in 1943 after China became an ally to the United States and joined in the war against the Axis Powers.

During the Second World War many Jews went to America to escape the holocaust started by Hitler. Today there are more than 6 million Jews in America accounting for more than 2% of the US population.The Jews have been reputed for being skillful financiers or money lenders hence the English expression “as rich as a Jew”. Many Jews in America are successful businessmen. The Jewsconstitute one of the many important pressure groups in American society having a great influence on U.S. politics. Their influence plays a very important role in prompting the U.S. Government to help Israel whenever there is the need to do so. Politically most Jewish-Americans tend to give their support to the Democrats.

According to a survey conducted by the Williams Institute nine million Americans or roughly 3.4% of the adult population identify themselves as homosexual bisexual or transgender. A 2016 Gallup poll also concluded that 4.1% of adult Americans identified as LGBT. The highest percentage came from the District of Columbia (10%) while the lowest state was North Dakota at 1.7%. In a 2013 survey the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 96.6% of Americans identify as straight while 1.6% identify as gay or lesbian and 0.7% identify as being bisexual.
