最近，咱们的万里长城与英国的哈德良长墙来了个“墙墙联手”。

近日，中国文化遗产研究院和英格兰遗产委员会在英国伦敦兰卡斯特宫正式签署了《关于哈德良长墙与中国长城的全面合作协议》。中英双方将在万里长城与哈德良长墙的研究、保护等方面开展广泛合作。

是的，这就是英国的长城。小伙伴们可能有问题要问双语君（微信ID：Chinadaily_Mobile）了 --- 这算什么长墙，不就是个石头堆吗？ 哪能和我们的万里长城相提并论？

哈德良长墙确实在长度以及高度上都无法与我国壮美的万里长城相比。

但是从历史价值角度来看，哈德良长墙见证的是曾经辉煌一度的罗马帝国鼎盛时期的版图。

当时的罗马帝国跨越的版图有多大呢？剑桥大学圣体学院研究员克里斯托弗•凯利在《罗马帝国简史》(The Roman Empire: A Very Short Introduction)里是这样描述的：

“Then the empire stretched from Hadrian's Wall in drizzle-soaked northern England to the sun-baked banks of the Euphrates in Syria; from the great Rhine–Danube river system which snaked across the fertile flat lands of Europe from the Low Countries to the Black sea to the rich plains of the North African coast and the luxuriant gash of the Nile Valley in Egypt. The empire completely circled the Mediterranean ... referred to by its conquerors as mare nostrum—'our sea'.”那时的罗马帝国从细雨滋润的英格兰北部哈德良长墙一直延伸到叙利亚幼发拉底河干涸的河岸；从蜿蜒于欧洲低地国家和黑海肥沃平原的莱茵河-多瑙河流域一直绵延至北非沿海富庶的平原和埃及尼罗河丰饶的河谷。罗马帝国完全包围了地中海。帝国的征服者把它看成是罗马人的内海，沾沾自喜地称其为“我们的海”。

这就解释了为什么哈德良长墙与万里长城同列于联合国教科文组织的世界文化遗产列表。

哈德良长墙在列表上被称为罗马帝国的边界（Frontiers of the Roman Empire），是在公元122年由当时的罗马帝国君主哈德良所兴建。公元122年，哈德良为防御北部皮克特人（Picts）的反攻，保护已控制的不列颠岛的人民安全，在今英格兰北部（Northern Britain）的边界修筑一系列防御工事，而长墙正是这部分防御工事的主要组成部分。

联合国教科文组织是这样评价哈德良长墙的：

It illustrates an ambitious and coherent system of defensive constructions perfected by engineers over the course of several generations and is outstanding for its construction in dressed stone and its excellent use of the spectacular upland terrain through which it passed.它（哈德良长墙）所呈现的是一个由几代工程师完善的野心勃勃且紧密相连的防御工程系统。并且，它在使用琢石/方石堆建筑上和巧妙切合当地显著的高地地形上成就卓越。

而世界教科文组织在评价万里长城时也恰恰着重赞扬了其在军事防御上的突出代表性，看来古代东西方的君主们英雄所见略同，在军事防御上都有未雨绸缪的战略部署。

英国广播公司（BBC）和英国《卫报》（The Guardian）在报道这次中英文化遗产联手时都不约而同地用到了“墙墙联手”（Wall to Wall）这个词。

其中，英国广播公司在导语部分进一步提出这次的双墙合作是独一无二的（unique）。

而卫报，则着重强调双墙合作期望能增强人们对于这两座伟大的建筑遗迹在历史与文化上的了解和促进旅游业发展（to encourage more tourism and increase the historical and cultural understanding of both great barriers）。

从历史角度和文化角度来说，这次双墙合作都是史无前例且具有重要意义；从文化与文明的交流与对话来说，这是一次利用历史遗产研究保护合作来加强中英双边关系的杰出范例。
