那么言外之意，a sports club 中的 sports 表示的是包含了很多体育运动的俱乐部，这应该就是我们使用 sports 而不用 sport 的原因，而 a sport club 实际上是不妥或者模棱两可的，例如：

Compared with that joining a sports club not only saves money but gets yourself into shape.

相比之下，加入一个体育俱乐部不仅可以省钱，而且可以强身健体。

需要注意的是，有时“play 球类名词”并不全是表示体育运动，如 play hardball；hardball 除了表示棒球运动之外，还可以用于一个习语 play hard ball，意为“采取强硬手段，绝不手软”等，例如：

The president is determined to play hardball with the terrorists.

总统决心对恐怖分子采取强硬手段。

还有一个就是 play ball (with sb)，它跟体育运动没关系，它也是一个习语，意为“（与）某人合作”，例如：

If the tenant still doesn't play ball with us to pay the rent we will have no choice but to report to the police.

如果房客还不跟我们合作交房租，那么我们别无选择，只能报警。

Play ball 还有开球的意思，这个用法来自棒球裁判员要求开始比赛，例如：
