The question from the parent was this “How do I get the kids on my son’s team

This year I’ve had the privilege to have been selected by a local association to work with and mold some bright-eyed little boys and girls at the Novice level for their future success in hockey. Although the sessions have been a lot of fun so far an email from one of the parents of a student of mine was sent to me which included a question which I had a lot of trouble responding to immediately. It caused me to recall some memories as a young goaltender with no training experience and some feelings which I was unable to shake during my first years in hockey. Unfortunately the question did not bring up many good memories. Instead it allowed me to come up with an idea which may help goaltenders at any age or level for as long as they continue to play hockey.
The question from the parent was this “How do I get the kids on my son’s team to stop blaming him for goals scored against him and treat him as a part of the team?” After reading this question I asked myself what I would’ve liked to have seen as a six year old when I first started to play as a goalie. What would’ve made the atmosphere in the dressing room better? And what would’ve made me enjoy playing more in my earliest development stages as a goaltender? In order to answer my own questions I had to recall my experiences and emotions from that time.
To put it simply I was a horrible goalie when I first started. Horrible. Like many I wasn’t a great skater so playing as a goalie was suggested by some of my coaches. To my parents’ disappointment I loved being a goaltender despite losing my first game 13-1. Outfitted with the worn out equipment loaned to me by the association (including pads filled with deer hair and covered with leather allowing for maximum absorbency of the water on the ice) I came out of my first game black and blue from shots to unprotected areas spears from the opposition and pileups. Luckily for me even though my coach walked into the dressing room after the loss saying “So is there anyone else who wants to be our goalie?” Thankfully the children on my team understood that it was my first game playing as a goaltender my first time having ever strapped on the pads and that I was a six year old playing with seven and eight year olds. Had my teammates said anything negative that day my spirit would have been crushed and I probably would have hated hockey enough not to return. Unfortunately not all teammates are as understanding.
Goalies are often referred to as being different crazy or the oddball for choosing to play the position. Upon making the choice to play the position for the love of the game goaltenders receive little-to-no credit for wins and much of the blame for losses at the younger age groups and as mentioned above not just from their teammates which can be even worse.
Yes there are games when the goaltender is going to allow goals that shouldn’t have gone past them. But goaltenders are entitled to bad days too. After a loss while playing Peewee hockey my teammates had turned on the other goaltender that had just had a horrendous game. Our coach entered the room and diffused the situation quickly with a few words:
“The other team has to get by our forwards then our defensemen and then our goalie. There isn’t just one player on the ice that is responsible for a goal. We have six guys on the ice and for each goal the other team got the puck past them all. Rather than blame one guy for a goal which six guys are responsible for look at yourselves find out how they got the puck past you and what you should’ve done differently. The team is responsible. We win as a team we lose as a team and if you think differently then maybe hockey isn’t for you”.
Leaving the dressing room that day I felt confidence which I hadn’t felt before knowing that my coach was there to support me as a goaltender and as a part of the team. Knowing that he was aware of the issues we were being faced with by acknowledging the situation and taking charge of it allowed me to walk into each arena with pride for myself and for my team. It was a statement which relieved my anxiety of being to blame for losses and which also brought us together as a team. Through great leadership from the coaches team building and a lot of hard work we played a lot of great hockey that year won tournaments went to the provincials and had a lot of fun. It was one of the most memorable hockey seasons of my life for all of the right reasons.
My opinion why every hockey player should play as a goalie at least once is as much about the physical requirements as it is mental and emotional.
Thankfully the days of being blamed for goals and losing games are limited to the younger ages in hockey (for the most part). During this time it is crucial for all teammates to understand how hard the position of a goaltender can be; the earlier the better. By doing so it generates a whole new respect for the game and for each other. It allows players to see the game through someone else’s eyes – on the ice as well as in the dressing room after a game. Players will feel the pain the self-doubt the disappointment by wearing the pads. They will understand what it feels like to let in a goal in the last minutes of a game when their team is tied. They will feel the anxiety when they see their defensemen pinch at the wrong time allowing for a breakaway to be generated. They’ll feel the physical pain upon getting hit with pucks in unprotected areas while attempting to do everything that they can while stopping a puck from going into the net. They’ll feel the disappointment of having the individual who scored one goal being selected as the star of a game despite having received a shutout and turning aside 40 shots. They will feel the anger of losing a game 1-0 walking into the dressing room and having teammates make comments such as “the goalie should’ve had that one” or “we probably would have won if the goalie would’ve stopped that shot”. By having players play as a goaltender once in their life it will allow them to understand the emotions of a goaltender and how the statements they make can hurt.
Although secondary the physical aspects are an important factor as well. By trying the position the player will understand just how difficult the game really is despite covering a small area of the ice surface. They will find out how heavy their equipment gets during a game and the true meaning of feeling the burn during a penalty kill as a direct result of the weight of the extra padding. They will understand that it may not be possible to freeze every rebound or control every shot into the corners. They will understand that they’re not able to make it out of the butterfly from one side of the crease to the other in time all of the time.
The goal of having players play as goalies is to ensure an understanding of the physical limitations and the emotional conflict that they will be faced with within themselves or within their dressing room. It also aids in an understanding by players that quality goaltenders aren’t developed overnight. Instead goaltenders have to put in more time into their training to get better. Let’s face it team practices are geared toward the skaters on the team more than for the benefit of the goaltender and a lot of the time the goaltenders are used as target practice for their teammates and with little to no training available to them. When not at the arena with their team many goaltenders take to clinics throughout the season and hockey schools throughout the summer to aid in their development. Goaltenders understand sacrifice.
Playing as a goalie at least once isn’t about punishment. Instead it’s about lifelong lessons it’s about respect it’s about the realization of how words can hurt and the equality of teammates in all team sports activities. It’s about informing people of the role of every position on the ice and educating players and their parents about the responsibilities of a team on and off of the ice. It’s about sharing the knowledge of coaches to help mold children as hockey players and as individuals who are accepting of others and it’s about involving goaltenders in team practices at a level and pace that aids in their development as well as the rest of the team.
Why should every hockey player play as a goaltender at least once? Because the goaltender is the single most dedicated relied upon person for every game and every practice. The goaltender is the teammate who has to get to the arena before everyone else in order to put their equipment on and be ready for ice time and who takes the extra time to participate in additional training because their practices don’t allow for proper development. The goaltender is the individual who can’t quit half way through the season because the team isn’t winning. The goaltender is the teammate taking time away from socializing within the dressing room in order to get a better stretch and warm up with a tennis ball in the hallway before a game to help their team. The goaltender is the person placing themselves in harm’s way in order to stop a frozen rubber disc from getting blasted past them to give their team a chance to win.
For parents asking me how to handle the blame of their children and to help them feel as though they are part of the team: inform the coaches refer them to this article have changes made in order to include the goaltenders in practices which will develop them and not just their teammates have parent meetings to express the concern and ask others to have a discussion with their children about what it means to be part of a team. You are not weak by asking for help. Instead you’re a hero to goaltenders everywhere but more importantly to your child.
Dedication may wear a mask but an upset child shouldn’t have to.
