(Text 1)M:Lisa’s birthday is coming up soon, isn’t it?I need to get a gift for her!
W:Yes.It’s this Friday, the day after tomorrow.
(Text 2)W:But why so early? You don’t have to be at work until 8:00.
M:After 6:00,the bus will be very crowded,and I won’t get a seat.
(Text 3)M:Are you going out,Lisa?
W:Yes.
M:Did you see the sky?It looks very much like rain—I’d suggest taking an umbrella.
(Text 4)W:Hi,Henry.Are you on your way home?
M:No.I’ll leave in about ten minutes.
W:Could you come and take me home?
M:Sure.
(Text 5)M:Can you please stop talking on the phone,Jenny?I can’t do my homework.
W:Sorry,Tom.I’ll go and talk in the garden.
M:Dad is reading a newspaper out there. Why don’t you go upstairs?
(Text 6)W:Hi,Mike.How are things going with you?
M:Not bad,Jenny,though I need a summer job.Do you know of any?
W:You know,I was just reading the wanted ads. Here’s two that might suit you:a waiter in a new restaurant or a clerk in a hotel.
M:Thanks, but I’m tired of working as a waiter.I did that last summer.I’d really like to try something new.
W:Then what about teaching some Chinese kids English or doing some babysitting?
M:I think I’d rather do the latter.
(Text 7)W:Excuse me,sir.I’m doing a survey for a newspaper.Could I ask you some questions?
M:Certainly.Go ahead,please.
W:Thanks. Can you tell me where you’re from?
M:I was born in China but my family moved to New York City when I was just two.I moved here to London for work last year.
W:Thank you!So when do you usually read newspapers? And what kind of news do you usually read?
M:I read in the early morning.I usually read the world news and then the local news.Sometimes I also read the sports news.
(Text 8)M:Good morning.General Manager’s office.
W:Hello! This is Jennifer Brown.I’m calling about the appointment with Mr Green for this morning.I’m afraid the appointment will have to be rescheduled.I’m very sorry about the change.
M:That’s all right.
W:Do you think this afternoon would suit him?
M:I’m afraid that’s a bit of a problem. In fact,he’s booked the whole week except tomorrow morning.
W:Tomorrow morning?Hmm...you see,I’ve made an appointment with Mr James for tomorrow morning.
M:I’m terribly sorry, but Mr Green is really busy this week.
W:I totally understand. When do you think I can come and see him tomorrow morning?
M:He’ll be free at 10:00.Do you think that will be convenient for you?
W:Yes.That’s quite all right for me.
(Text 9)W:Tom,I heard you’re going to France.
M:Yes.I’m going on June 10th,the day after tomorrow. So Lisa,I have a question for you—what does the “OK” sign mean to you?
W:It means “OK”,or “good” in English¬speaking countries,of course.Why do you ask?
M:I just read an article about what the “OK” sign means in different cultures. The French use it to mean “zero” or “useless”,the Japanese use it to mean “money”,and it means something very bad to people who live in the northern part of Greece.
W:That’s interesting.I think one can be easily misunderstood when traveling abroad.
M:That’ true. That’ why I was reading the article—I wanted to learn about gestures in French culture, since I’m traveling there.
W:So are you going there for work?
M:No.I’m visiting some famous places there.
W:Are you taking a taxi or bus to the airport?I’d be happy to give you a ride if you like.
M:Thank you very much for the offer, but my brother is already planning to drive me there that morning.
(Text 10)Good morning,Mr Green. This is the bike shop. You asked us to get a bike from Germany for your son.Well,it’s just arrived.I’m very sorry to tell you that they don’t make it in the colour he asked for—I got that wrong, sorry.I’m looking at it now,and it’s a lovely blue.I’m sure he’ll prefer it to gray or black, anyway. Now,the price I gave you was $120,but it’s now $20 less than that,a very low price for such a good bike.Oh,and I’ve got the bicycle lights you asked for,the best kind for cycling safety at night.I’m sure they are the ones you want. Can you come down later today? We’re open until 5 pm.If you can’t do that,I’ll be here from 9 tomorrow morning.Remember, don’t come to the shop at No.11 King Street or the shop at No.22 Park Street. Please come to the main shop at No.12 Yellow Street, opposite the bookshop.Thanks.
