Traveling Abroad on My Own
By Fawn Li
My research partner and I were invited to speak at an academic meeting in Japan in March 2017 during cherry blossom season. We agreed that it would also be a good time to take a vacation but for some reason he backed out of the trip. It was to be my very first time to travel abroad but the idea of doing it alone scared me so much that I almost backed out myself. When I told my professor Dr. Zheng that I had changed my mind. He urged me to reconsider. Traveling abroad unaccompanied he said would be a lifetime experience. “Trust yourself!”
It took me days to make up my mind to go to Japan alone but once I decided I got to work. I prepared a detailed timeline from the moment I planned to get on the plane to the moment I would arrive back in Shanghai. I read a stack of books about Japan – its customs its food its traffic its shopping. I learned some useful phrases and I studied the map to work out my route from one scenic spot to the next. Most important I listed the names of all my girlfriends who had asked me to buy them makeup and skin care products.
I set off from Shanghai airport with two bags a small one for my clothes and a huge empty suitcase for my shopping. On the plane I was seated next to a nice lady about the age of my mother. She could speak some Japanese I could speak English so we agreed to help each other. When we got off the plane in Tokyo we went together to baggage claim and before we separated she showed me how to get to the subway station on the next level down. By this time I was no longer afraid. I thought I could simply google my train and get to my hotel without any problem but it was more complicated than that. Unfortunately there were two stations with similar names. When I got to what I thought was my destination I googled my hotel and found it was still a long way away so I knew I had to take another train to get where I was going. I wasn’t worried though and I eventually found the hotel without mishap.
My speech went well and I enjoyed meeting my Japanese research colleagues. After the three days of the conference it was time to start my shopping and sightseeing. I was a little nervous at first because I could hardly speak a word of Japanese but a lot of Japanese people speak English so communication was not as hard as I thought despite their strong Japanese accent. Once I showed my list to a salesclerk pointed to some items and asked “Where can I find these?”
I could not understand what she said so she came out from behind the counter and walked with me to the shelf where the items were. It was only then that I realized that she had answered “On the second shelf.”
