THIS SUMMER a lot of people were glued to their screens watching Tencent's wildly popular talent show Produce 101 (《创造101》). At the end of eight episodes 11 girls were "picked" from 101 competitors to form a girl band — Rocket Girls 101(火箭少女101). Their brilliant performances and wonderful singing and dancing received intense scrutiny (密切关注).
Yang Chaoyue one of the contestants (参赛者) on the show won third place in spite of heavy criticism of her performance. A lot of people put this down to luck. As a result many Chinese netizens have reposted her picture hoping some of her good luck will rub off on them.
Yang is not the only personality who it seems might share some good fortune with others. Beijing-based IT worker Xinxiaodai won a high-profile (备受瞩目的) lottery from Alipay which awarded her a number of prizes including a trip to Africa and an eight-day cruise (游轮度假) in Alaska. Thousands of netizens reposted her photo too in the hope that they might get lucky too.

Worshipping koi is not a big tradition in the United States. Yet local residents were trying their luck in hopes of winning Mega Millions (超级百万，美国的一种) after a store recently sold a winning ticket worth nearly $1.6 billion. Tourists hoping to buy another winning ticket have flocked to the same store and even taken selfies with the store owner.
It is easy to understand others wanting to share in the good luck. But most people realize you cannot rely on luck. Although we see successful people like Yang get lucky we often forget the hundreds or even thousands of hours of preparation that led to this success. Whether you are taking a test or competing in a sport failing to prepare is preparing to fail as the saying goes. Sometimes not even good luck can save you. The best we can do is work hard and try to make our own luck.
Roman philosopher Seneca has left us with a wise saying which is still very relevant today: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." When you find your opportunity it is better to be prepared than leave your fate to luck.
