Thousand Oaks Residence

Thousand Oaks Residence is a 12 000 square foot five-bedroom family home in California designed by architects Rios Clementi Hale with interiors by Nicole Hollis. With the heart of a modern farmhouse the home embraces the outdoors with floor-to-ceiling windows and an interconnected series of patios and entertaining areas including a pool and fire pit. The property also includes a separate guest cottage and a pool house with a gym.

Interiors were designed around the family’s lifestyle from supporting their interest in entertaining to highlighting their art collection that includes work by Richard Serra Damien Hirst and Ed Ruscha as well as up-and-coming and West Coast artists. The colour was used for custom cabinetry throughout the home met by natural materials including stone wood and linen.

This architecturally significant three-bedroom family residence sits atop Russian Hill in San Francisco. The original John Bricknell Victorian was built in 1866 and transformed into a classic Italianate by the architect Julia Morgan in 1916 for prominent art importer David Atkins. It has most recently been seismically upgraded and carefully installed with 21st century amenities while respecting Ms. Morgan’s original attention to detail and craftsmanship.

The new owners of the home are a close-knit family who looked to leave the suburbs for the city. The family has a strong appreciation for innovation creativity and play and looked to translate this modern point of view into their residence. A new kitchen bathroom and master bedroom were required as were spaces that were open modern and kid- friendly. The clients tapped Nicole Hollis to reimagine the house with a modern sensibility while still keeping its original “soul.”

The project involved a three-year full remodel. The renovation preserved the home’s myriad original details including moldings and fireplaces and emphasized the expansive windows natural light and large back yard.
San Francisco Flat

The Nicole Hollis studio has chosen two colors to give unity to the interior design of this house located in San Francisco. Black and white together synonymous with contemporaneity and elegance. This house uses them in all the rooms so that a unit is created throughout the decorative route.

In the living room which highlights the marble embouchure of the fireplace a bar furniture and an original seating area with low chairs and armchairs next to the viewpoint.
