Cubicle Clues 工作环境会说话
Criminal investigators inspect crime scenes searching for evidence. Cautiously they comb an area looking for clues to learn more about a crime. In an office setting where there are no murders or third-degree felonies these same techniques can also be applied to an employee's workstation. Cubicles or work areas aren't just for working but they serve as peepholes into the personalities of their inhabitants.
Sam Gosling a personality researcher at the University of Texas Austin states "What's going on outside the mind reflects what's going on inside the mind." After studying hundreds of cubicles Gosling discerned that the little touches that make these workspaces personal tell more about a person than meets the eye.
For instance Joe's desk may be the tidiest in the office without a photograph coffee mug or anything on it other than a stapler. Without saying a word he is unconsciously stating to his employer that he isn't committed to his work. By not personalizing his space he is showing that he'd quit if a better opportunity came along. On the flip side Mary's three-walled cubicle is her home away from home. Pictures of her family adorn the cloth-covered walls her daughter's artwork is tacked up next to her monitor and a well-tended plant is overgrowing its pot on the corner of her desk. This personalized space is telling the office and the world that she is there for the long haul.
The positioning of items most notably photographs can also tell about a person. If the photos are facing away from the employee the photos are there for the sake of passersby. If the pictures are facing the employee they are personal reminders of the ones they love. Neat or messy personalized or not office spaces provide a small glance into a person's mind. The Phoenix from the Flames浴火凤凰
Modern readers of fantasy know the phoenix as a bird that lives a long time and then bursts into flames. From the ashes it rises again. This winged creature symbolizes reincarnation and immortality. Many legends say the phoenix lights itself on fire using fragrant wood such as cinnamon to create a sweet-smelling funeral fire. When it emerges from the ashes it collects its predecessor's remains and protects them in an egg. It then flies to Heliopolis the city of the sun in Egypt and lays the ashes on the altar of Ra the sun god.
According to the ancient Greeks the phoenix lived in Arabia near a cool well. Every morning at dawn it would dip in the clear water and sing an enchanting song. It was so delightful that Ra would stop his chariot and listen as the bird bathed and sang.
In Chinese fables there is a bird similar to the phoenix called fenghuang. It is one of the four lucky creatures representing the points of the compass. The dragon rules the east; the fenghuang marks the south; the tiger occupies the west; and the tortoise can be found in the north. Fenghuang was an indication of good fortune. He had a beautiful song and remarkable plumage.
Were you to look in the sky during a solar eclipse you would see what looks like the wings of a phoenix spread out across the sky. In its center is the sun a disc that could be its egg full of ashes from its previous life. The bird is seemingly in flight on its way to Ra's altar.
