Forever Little Baos

掌握“美式发音”技巧,一个句子就GO了!

THE STORY of a lonely mother whose little dumpling comes to life has touched the hearts of millions around the world. Written and directed by Chinese-Canadian Domee Shi (石之予) the Oscar-winning animated short film Bao tells a heart-warming tale of parental love and the loss felt when children grow older and leave home.

The mother in the short film finds great joy in caring for her little dumpling-boy. But all little "baos" grow up make friends and become independent. As the bao becomes a teen he pulls away from his mother and her protective attention. Instead of wanting to spend time with her the bao wants to chat on the phone and hang out with his friends. His mother however wants everything to stay the same. All teens can relate to this frustrating time when parents want to treat you like a "little dumpling" even though you're almost an adult.

The mother in Bao literally shaped and formed her little boy. This is symbolic of how parents feel they must shape and form their children into adults. As you become your own person parents naturally begin to worry and might try to maintain control.

As the mother in the film desperately (拼命地) tries to stop her bao from leaving home she pops him into her mouth and swallows him. She is immediately filled with regret and sadness. Her desire to keep him close makes her lose him forever. What seems like a tragic ending however turns out to be merely a dream. That dream is a metaphor (隐喻) of the relationship between the mother and her real son a metaphor that may feel familiar to you.

Are your parents overly protective? Do they make you feel like a "little dumpling"? If so it can help to remember the love and sadness of the mother in Bao. When you want to slam a door or roll your eyes (翻白眼) in frustration remember that your parents are motivated by love. Empathize with (设身处地感受) how your parents feel — they know you will soon fly off leaving them as empty nesters (空巢老人). While the desire to become more independent is normal you can express your feelings without "lashing out (猛烈抨击)" like the little bao does in the film. Ask them how you can have some privacy and independence in a way that makes them feel comfortable. And remember to reserve special time to remind them that in some way you will always be their "little bao".
