先姚安公有仆，貌谨厚而最有心计。

My deceased father magistrate of Yaoan had a servant who looked like a meticulous and sincere man but really was the most calculating.

一日，乘主人急需，饰词邀勒，得赢数十金。

Once upon a time my father asked him to do something very urgent so he took the opportunity to pretended to refuse and ask for credit and reward finally he extorted more than ten taels of silver.

其妇亦悻悻自好，若不可犯；而阴有外遇，久欲与所欢逃，苦无资斧。既得此金，即盗之同遁。

The servant’s wife was haughty and self-righteousness. However she had already cheated on his husband and was planning to elope with her lover but was short of money. Now they stole the ten taels of silver and run away.

越十余日捕获，夫妇之奸乃并败。

Unfortunately for them about ten days later they were arrested and the matter was exposed.

余兄弟甚快之。姚安公曰：“此事何巧相牵引，一至于斯！殆有鬼神颠倒其闻也。夫鬼神之颠倒，岂徒博人一快哉！凡以示戒示尔。故遇此种事，当生警惕心，不可生欢喜心。

My brothers and I were greatly satisfied to hear the news. My father said “How could things be so coincidental? Extorting a few bounties and pull out the adultery behind it? There must be ghosts and gods pull strings. Are ghosts and gods doing this to amuse we mortal? They did it as a warning. Therefore whenever you encounter something similar you should be vigilant and never gloat.” Then he went on

甲与乙为友，甲居下口，乙居泊镇，相距三十里，乙妻以事过甲家，甲醉以酒而留之宿，乙心知之，不能言，反致谢焉。甲妻渡河覆舟，随急流至乙门前，为人所拯。

“A and B were friends. One lived in Xiakou and the other in Pozhen town. They lived thirty lis(15 kilometers) apart.” Once B's wife went out on business and passed by A’s house on the way. A was malicious and he pretended to keep her for dinner drunk her and tricked her into staying the night. B knew this but he was too ashamed to argue about it. Instead he thanked A for hosting his wife. Shortly afterwards when A's wife was crossing the river the boat capsized. She drifted with the current near B's house and happened to be rescued.

乙识而扶归，亦醉以酒而留之宿。甲心知之，不能言也，亦反致谢焉。

B recognized that it was A’s wife so he took her home drunk her and spent the night with her. Of course A knew what happened between his wife and B but he was also ashamed of revealing it. A had to pretend he didn't know anything and thanked B for taking care of his wife.

其邻媪阴知之，合掌诵佛曰：‘有是哉，吾知惧矣。’其子方佐人诬讼，急自往呼之归。汝曹如此媪可也。”

An old woman in the neighborhood seeing both of these things clasped her hands and chanted the Buddha ‘ How could this happen? It's terrible！’ It happened that her son was providing perjury for a lawsuit so she calls her son back to stop him from doing bad things. It would be nice enough if you can do what this old lady do.”
