Tick Tock Time

Review
So Many Plants
There are all kinds of plants. Some are big and some are small. Some grow tall on strong stems. Some are vines that climb up walls and fences. Some plants have fruits. Some have smooth stem and leaves. Some have hard bumpy bark.
Some redwood trees grow to be 350 feet tall. That’s taller than the Statue of Liberty.
All plants are different but they are alike in some ways too. Big or small they are all living things. They grow and they change. Some large plants start out as tiny seeds. When they get what they need they grow into large plants.
Corn Kernels are seeds that grow into tall stalks.
Plants grow almost everywhere. You can find plants in warm and cold climates. They can grow wherever they get the things they need. Plants need water light and air to live.
Crocus in the snow
Plants Need Water
Water dissolves nutrients from the soil so plants can use them. Nutrients are what living things need to grow and have energy.
The stem of a plant is filled with tiny tubes. The tubes carry water from the roots to the leaves. The leaves use the nutrients in the water to make food.
Leaf Stem Root
Even plants that grow in dry desert climates need water. Deserts do not get much rain. Desert plants have adapted to dry climates. For example a cactus can store water in its stem. A cactus can live for a long time on a little bit of water.
Cactus
Plants Need Light
Plants need more than nutrients and water to grow. They also need light. Plants use the sunlight that falls on their leaves to make food.
This daisy gets a lot of light. It is heathy.
Some plants need a lot of light. Some only need a little. If plants cannot get the light they need they will not be healthy. They may even die.
This daisy got very little light. It died.
Plants Need Air
Plants need water and sunlight to survive. They need one more thing too. Like all living things Plants need air.
Air is made up of many different gases. One of those gases is carbon dioxide. Plants take carbon dioxide from the air. Along with water nutrients and light they use it to make food.
Plants and animals share the air around them. They use sir in different ways.
Animals breathe in oxygen. They breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. In this way they both need each other.
Plants help keep the air clean for people and animals.
When plants get what they need they grow healthy and strong. When plants are healthy and strong our environment is a better place.
We know plants are at work when we harvest apples from a tree or grapes from a vine. We also know plants are at work when we breathe fresh clean air.
Fruits and flowers may grow on trees bushes or vines.

New Story
“Pie?” asked Charlie as he walked into Mr. Fernando’s classroom. “ Why are we studying pie today?”
“ I love pie!” cheered Will. “ That sounds great!“
“ Good morning!” said Mr. Fernando. He walked into the room holding a box. “ As part of our soil unit We’ll be looking at mud pie today. Grab some pie but watch out for worms!”
“Worms?” Meg and Emily grasped.
“Mud pie ?” growled Will. “ I like my pie to have apples not worms! I like it to be smooth not full of dirt!”
“ Will I’m glad you said that ” said Mr. Fernando.” If your favorite pie has a smooth texture it must have small particles. The soil I used to make this mud pie is made up of large particles. Those particles gave the pie its texture.”
“ It’s not smooth at all ” Will said.
Mr. Fernando unrolled a large picture of mud pie.
“ Let’s look at this chart ” he said.
“ This mud pie is made of substances from nature. Rocks dirt and sand are parts of the soil. Soil makes up this mud pie.”
The students looked at their own pieces of mud pie.
“ What other things are in the soil? Asked Mr. Fernando.
“ I see worms in my soil ” answered Meg.
“Worms make sure the soil has air ” said Mr. Fernando.
“ Now let’s talk about soil ” Mr. Fernando said. He started to write on the board.” Soil is made up of four materials. It has grains air water and something called humus.”
“ Aren’t sand grains just small particles of rock?” asked Emily.
“ That’s right “ said Mr. Fernando with a smile.” You really know your soil!”
“ Why does soil have air?” asked Charlie.
“ Rain is full of substances that help plants grow ” answered Mr. Fernando. “ Air spaces let rain seep into the soil. The water goes down to the roots of a plant below the ground. then the plant sucks up the water. Worms help the soil have air.”
“ What is humus?” asked Will.
“ Humus is little pieces of dead animals and plants. It makes the soil look black or brown ” explained Mr. Fernando.
“Yuck!” said Will with a frown. “ I think hums is gross!”
RRRRRRRING! The school bell jingled.
“ It’s time for lunch !” called Mr. Fernando. “ We’ll finish the rest of lesson later.”
“ We learned all about soil. What’s left?” asked Will.
“ Worms!” Mr. Fernando grinned. “Enjoy your lunch!”
Worms Help the Earth
Worms live in soil all over the world. If soil has enough food and water worms can live in it. Most worms live near the top of the soil. They eat dead plants and animals soil and tiny rocks.
Worms help the earth in many ways. Worms are food for hungry animals and birds. Worms also help plants. When worms wiggle through soil they help air get in. Worms also make tunnels that help water drain from the soil. Worms help make the soil rich and good for growing plants. Farmers love worms because worms help their crops grow.

Refuse
Reduce

Recycle
Rot
