Deer Seekers
by Tong Zuoyan
“Deer are seen in deep woods by a creek far from midday bells.”
Autumn comes as promised over the cliffdrop with yellow grasses.
A herd of deer come by raising their twiggy antlers
like trees fanning out in the valley one by one.
For sure I am not talking about red deer or white-tailed deer
but something quixotic an allegorical deer
an idea that we hold dear to heart on a treacherous journey.
Each fork on the road takes you to a different horizon to
new forks in new seasons through rosebushes and brambles.
Prodding forward you might find a lost trail or a precipice.
A life in exile a map with known destinies torn apart
meanwhile the new door opens into a jungle where I scurry and stumble.
And there are new tracks each paving its way forward.
It was a heavenly beast horned like Kirin
paired with gigantic wings. Then it became
a hot trail for fortunetellers to deduce prophesies.
All that we wanted in life was power success and money.
But under the splendid exterior the heart is thick with rust.
Our feet reach the higher ground but long for a pavilion in the lake.
The odyssey is near the end glories and sorrows fading
time to contemplate closing the circle. An autumn dewdrop
freshly coalesced holds a universe within.
Deer seekers come rushing in and out in droves.
Ah if you stop to behold the dewdrop it will
enter your heart and the stars will shine their light on you.
