Song Without Warning
I want what fire craves
to hold everything always
to burn through appearance
like flames shattering a mirror.
I want what summer promises
in breezes perfumed by honeysuckle
jasmine andrhododendron blossoms
when heat quickens the senses
during nights of unforgettablelovemaking
like poems in which you
encircle every line.
I want what water clenches
when deep-rooted trees are swept away
by the river’s flood tide.
I want what compost and soil sustain
tenderness turning flesh intolightning’s afterimage
with pleasure that can keep no secrets.
Snowflakes Blown into a Keyhole
Don’t keep avoiding love.
A raindrop disappears
effortlessly with a single kiss
into the restless sea.
Sometimes strangers
from a shipwreck arrive
parched and thirsty.
Sometimes survivors
burnt in a fire turn up
trembling from the cold.
You believe your numbness
is the end of the story.
But it’s only a symptom
of the body suffering withdrawal.
Even after generosity
turns your hair gray
keep searching for the one
counting on your kindness.
Lovers find each other
mysteriously like snowflakes
blowninto a keyhole.
Where the Wind Ends
Undress the daylight.Don’t wait through another winter;
turn the lock into the key.
Unzip the darkness;gather everything the journey allows.
Only what you caress becomes visible
like teeth marks
on the shoulder of the moon.
So suddenly near so suddenly near
keep the memory in tow
and the mind adrift.
Wait for me where the wind ends.
Love Opens the Hands
Only the heart enjoys
this fishing without a net;
beauty locks all the doors
and disaster breaks them down.
Long absence resonates anticipation
like the guesswork of desire
but deep roots grow
deliberately around rock
so that any guest who finally arrives
eclipses the sun becoming the feast
and the wine and the dessert.
Touch the scar and it
will offer some astounding advice:
loveliness fades but not grace;
the world loves lightning
less than fire.
Love opens the hands for kindness.
and kindness is a debt
you never tire of repaying.

Fear of Almanacs
I’ve opened to the year
of dancing scorpions.
Desire will disappear into museums
where docents will explain
the allure of nakedness.
Phones will stop ringing
and screens will go blank.
Woodcutters will abandon
their axes in stumps.
This year death and destruction
will linger as close as a pair of aces.
Shifts in the magnetospherewill cause the seasons to go haywire.
Someone you once loved
will become a yawn of sand
right in front of your face.
You will look out onthe sea
and its odor will only remind you
of the unforgettable stench
of the slaughterhouse.
You will become the moth
swimming in candle wax.
Your body will be outlived
by heat lightning.
The undertaker’s final offer
will sound like a good deal.
Orpheus will not return
to sing the darkness
out of the underworld.
The Lover’s Body
May your hands
reach beyond dreams
where moonlight
awakens as flesh.
May your kisses
seep deeper than rain
into the body’s
pink crossroads.
May your fingers
touch the unexpected
always with the thrill
of loving.
Woman in a Black Velvet Blindfold Kneeling
in Front of a Three-way Mirror
The restlessness of your kickstand eyes
bound under a spider’s weight of darkness
you search your senses for what perfumeconnects.
Expectation excites your sensitive skin
so that a mere whisper causes your ears
to flush red as bleeding tattoos.
Your offered nakedness waits
soft as sea foam that gathers at the tide line
dissolving into the trance of sand.
The Five Pleasures
To desire means building a house
made of wind and nakedness
where everyday new rooms appear
with walls whiter than pearls
floating on the skin’s surface.
To be content means noticing
the tranquility after a storm
when even a rainbow never manages
to finally touch the earth.
To remember means still feeling
the sunlight’s warmth where
someone’s hands or thighs
first caressed your flesh.
To enjoy means learning
to savor the body’s slight
hesitation before orgasm
and the slippage between tenses
as one candle lights another.
To love means learning to balance
like a tree that reaches
in every direction at once.
Lipstick Acropolis
The lipstick acropolis of your jack-in-the-boxsmile
appears abruptly as the end of a dream
when from the fifth floor walk-up fire escape
you drop the moon in a black guitar case
into the empty courtyard of night and turn to me with your naked body
covered in fireflies so that I can bite thesun.
Become a River
If you spend your entire life
dealing with impostors and cheats
how can you be surprised
when everyone recognizes
you as a swindler?
Anger threatens you most.
Envy paralyzes you.
You’re like dust
darkening a mirror.
You’ve always craved a different path.
So begin now while you still can.
Wander in this world
like welcomed kisses
across astonished flesh.
Those who love embrace
with the impatience of wind and fire.
Those who love become a river
offering to carry everything to the sea.
A Pearl That Can Only Taste the Sea
It’s too late for me
to worry about ambivalence
love burned my house
to the ground
with a single glance.
So don’t ask me to remember
the time before I met you
because now I’m like a pearl
that can only taste the sea.
Once I was only a tiny stream
trickling into a river.
Inside you I became
an unfathomable ocean.
Once I was dust
yearning for kisses.
After your lips
I’m the wind’s nakedness
touching everywhere at once.
Perfume and Lightning
I remember a night
weightless as
a summer dress
when each kiss mixed
the stillness of knots
with the thirst of ashes.
You rose from the bed
and tucked your hair
behind your back
with both hands
and your nakedness
paler than footsteps
vanishing in sand
dared anything
likeperfume and lightning.
That Wild Laughter Beyond Despair
Sooner or later you realize
that you need to dig deeper
like a seed that searches
everywhere spreading
its roots through shadows
before reaching towards the sun.
Sooner or later you’ll become
the patient’s unquenchable thirst:
a fever burning without light
a whirlwind thrashing without movement
a body floating without a surface.
And your smile that was once
a rose thrown into the fire
now will become as inexhaustible
as that wild laughter beyond despair.
The Keeper of Strangeness
I am the light’s fever in honey.
I am the lullaby heard in a nightmare.
In black-eyed alleys
and along tide calloused wharves
I am the room where you find what you’remissing.
I am the dial tone flesh of frightening energytransfers.
I am the expectant hands hovering overnakedness
and the insomnia of sperm.
My lap is a toolshed reaching dreamward.
I am the scarecrow made of birds.
I am the inexhaustible memory of salt.
Out of anger I created the wind’s solitude;
out of love the restlessness of the rain’slong inhalations.
I am the scream’s only bridegroom.
In the Hall of Lost Footsteps
In the hall of lost footsteps
where nothing echoesbecause of the thick carpeting
no one is waiting
yet no one ever leaves.
Darkness stares outfrom the deepest shadows
like a grave filling
with rainwater.Through the locked window
a crescent moon rises
like an empty oarlock.
In the hall of lost footsteps
where only silenceclings tighter than time
someone is pronouncing
names of distant cities
wherever rose petals fallon an open map.
