强调是人们表达思想必不可少的手段之一。不论是口语中还是书面语，都不乏语气的强调。强调的方式很多，如通过重音、语调、字体，可以通过词汇手段，如词的重复、强调词的使用等。也可以通过句法结构，强调句型就是常用的一种句法结构。
一、 常用强调句
1． It is/was 人 who/that 其他
【释义】
该句型用来强调人物，被强调的人在句中可以做主语或宾语，其他部分置于强调句型连词who/that之后。
【举例】
① It was Jack who stole the money from the safe.
从保险柜里偷走钱的是杰克。（强调Jack Jack在句中做主语）
试比较：
Jack stole the money from the safe.
杰克从保险柜里偷走了钱。
② It was my sister who bought me this nice shirt.
这件漂亮的衬衫是我妹妹送给我的。（强调my sister my sister在句中做主语）
试比较：
My sister bought me a nice shirt.
我妹妹给我买了件漂亮的衬衫。
③ It was some famous actors and actresses that he invited to his birthday party.
应邀参加他的生日宴会的是一些著名的男女演员。（强调some famous actors and actresses 在句中做宾语。）
试比较：
He invited some famous actors and actresses to his birthday party.
他邀请了一些著名的男女演员参加他的生日宴会。
【要点提示】
1） 强调句时态根据后面句子的时态而定，如果后面句子是过去的某种时态，强调句则用过去时，否则用一般现在时。
2） 强调句的肯定，疑问和否定在强调句的谓语部分表现，与从句无关。
3） 强调从句的语序为直陈语序。
4） 被强调的部分在从句中不可再次出现。
5） 主语强调句与there be 句型的区别：
Were all the people on the bus killed in the accident?
No ______ only the driver that got killed.
A. it was B. there was C. that is D. that was
从答语的语气来看，强调遇难的只是司机一人，所以是强调句型，答案应该是A。
6） 注意强调句型中的主谓一致：
当被强调的部分在句中做主语时，从句中的谓语动词在人称和数上应该与被强调的部分一致，如果被强调部分有肯定和否定两部分组成，应该与肯定部分保持一致。
① It is I who ____ responsible for this project
A. is B. has C. am D. are
被强调部分是I，所以谓语动词应该是am。
② It was you not he that ____ asked to gather information for the company.
A. were B. was C. are D. is
从句中谓语动词应该与肯定的一致，所以答案应该是A。
2． It is/was 时间/地点/原因/方式 that 其它
【释义】
当强调的是时间、地点、原因或方式时，强调句的连词则应该用that，所强调的时间、地点、原因或方式在句中可以做主语、宾语或状语。
【举例】
① It was on National Day that Tom and Mary got married.
汤姆和玛丽是在国庆节结婚的。（强调时间状语on National Day。）
试比较：
Tom and Mary got married on National Day.
汤姆和玛丽在国庆节结婚了。
② It was in this very place that I got robbed yesterday on my way home from work.
我昨天下班回家时就是在这里遭人抢劫的。（强调地点状语in this very place。）
试比较：
I got robbed here on my way home from work yesterday.
我昨天下班回家时在这里被人抢劫了。
③ It was because of overwork that he got ill
他是因为劳累过度才病倒的。（强调原因状语because of overwork。）
试比较：
He got ill because of overwork.
你由于劳累过度病倒了。
【要点提示】
1） 注意强调句型与It is/was … since/before/when…的区别
2） 这类强调句型是考查的重点，考试中一般是对强调连词的使用，经常是that与where when why，或which的对比，也就是说强调句型和定语从句的对比。
① It was about 600 years ago _____ the first clock with a face and an hour hand was made.
A. that B. until C. before D. when
② It was only when I reread his poems recently ____ I began to appreciate their beauty.
A. until B. that C. then D. so
以上两题都是强调句型，强调的都是时间状语，连词应该是that。
③ It was nearly midnight _____ I got back home yesterday.
A. that B. which C. when D. at which
本句不是强调句型，it用来指时间，从句为时间状语从句，表示“昨晚我到家时已经快半夜了。”，答案应该是C。
④ It was in the place ____ I got robbed ____ I restored my watch.
A. that that B. where that
C. that where D. where where
本句主干上是强调句型，但是被强调部分有一个定语从句，答案应该是B。
⑤ It is already two years ____ we met last.
A. that B. since C. before D. when
本句也不是强调句型，it指时间，表示“自从……以来已有……时间”，答案应该是B，构成It is … since …句型。
3． It was not until 时间短语/从句 that 主谓
【释义】
在not … until ….（“直到…… 才……”）的句型中，如果强调时间状语，则应将否定词not一并提到强调位置。这时，从句中应用肯定形式。
【举例】
① It was not until midnight that my husband came back home.
直到半夜我丈夫才回家。
试比较：
My husband didn't come back home until midnight.
我丈夫直到半夜才回家。
② It was not until you told me the truth that I got to know that I had been cheated.
直到你告诉我事情的真相，我才知道自己被骗了。
试比较：
I didn’t know that I had been cheated until you told me the truth.
我直到你告诉了我事情的真相才知道自己被骗。
③ It was not until the war was over that he was able to get happily back to work.
直到战争结束他才得以高兴地回到自己的工作岗位。
试比较：
He was not able to get happily back to work until the war was over.
他直到战争结束才得以高兴地回到自己的工作岗位。
【要点提示】
该句型也是考查的重点，主要涉及以下两点：
1） 强调句连词的使用
It was not until 1920 ____ regular radio broadcast began.
A. while B. which C. that D. since
只要考生清楚这一强调句型就不难判断答案为C。
2） 从句中是否倒装问题
It was _____________________.
A. not until mother came back when the baby stopped crying
B. not until mother came back did the baby stop crying
C. until mother came back when the baby stopped crying
D. not until mother came back that the baby stopped crying
本句强调的是时间，句子表示的是“直到妈妈回来婴儿才停止哭”，强调连词应该是that，从句中也不能用倒装结构，答案应该是D。
