The advent of the computer age has revolutionized our lives in the way we live and work; however some believe that this technological manifestation will cause loneliness and a decline in the ability to socialize an opinion with which I only partially agree.
One of the main reasons for citing that the digital age has resulted in people feeling isolated is the aspect concerning the daily interactions that used to be prevalent in society. This daily interaction such as visiting the bank or going to the local shops would normally allow people to engage in ‘small talk’ and particularly with the older generation would mark a highlight in their day-to-day social interaction. With the burgeoning and ubiquitous use of digital technology however such face-to-face encounters are rapidly disappearing and as such has caused some to feel a sense of isolation especially for those who are unable or unwilling to become adept at using computerized innovations.
Despite this development within a certain demographic one that often occurs within the older segment of the population anytime a technological shift transpires it is evident that computer technology has actually increased social interaction. Case in point is the way technology such as ‘smart devices’ have made people’s work more efficient while simultaneously allowing the average office worker to communicate more with their colleagues via the Internet. The computer age has also given us the possibility of communicating over wide distances and so while face-to-face contact may have decreased the opportunity to engage in social contact by not only texting but now also by video chat means that our oral social communication skills remain intact.
In conclusion though the oldest generations may find it difficult to adapt to the digital age and feel isolated due to the diminishing opportunities to partake in daily chats when engaging in errands I believe that overall the Internet has increased our ability to communicate even though the manner in which we do has changed.
