Computer science since my childhood has been my dream major and has been motivating me to explore indefatigably. Because of my enthusiasm for it the fierce competition and heavy workload in college become the finest nutrition to foster my studies fortifying my expertise in computer science with practical skills of programming algorithms databases and of operating systems etc. It is computer science that rewarded me with the strongest sense of accomplishment. Longing from heart for the strong atmosphere of creating in this field moreover I gradually realized that as a Computer Science major I cannot merely focus on immediate professional skills; I must also contemplate how to bring creative changes to computer technology itself which can stimulate my innovative potential further. For this cogitative purpose I resolve to pursue more cutting-edge technology of computer science so as to consolidate my professionalism of undertaking software engineeringresearch.

I have been striving to maintain a high GPA both at University of Alberta and University of British Columbia which can be proved by my performance on Dean’s Honour List each year and the Faculty of Science International Student Scholarship. With my knowledge extending itself to such CS areas as software engineering artificial intelligence and machine learning I obtained my greatest harvest during study the top-down thinking method which guides me to learn starting from the topmost applications and by learning about the working principle of the previous layer to approach the nature of the machine. The structured sense of logic embodied in this process truly captivated me; I also used to feel deeply appealed to artificial intelligence; however my fantasy namely there is an omnipotent algorithm which can reason like a human brain broke into pieces after I studied machine learning which told me there is no such supremetechnology and knowledge to date. Realizingthat mathematics and logic are still the fundamentals underpinning computer science I therefore chose the philosophical course of formal language to get closer to the nature of reasoning which enlightened me a lot in logical thinking.

As my theoretical foundation in computer science was built up I also began to develop a series of CS works which can realize different functions. APixiv scrawler developed by me with Python can help its users save illustrations from Pixiv a virtual community website. Another work developed with Python is a Markdown extension that can support the LaTeX-like template. In 2018 I familiarized myself with the practical use of Java by designing a note-taking desktop application. By using Flask and MySQL I designed and deployed an online discussion board from zero in February 2019 and have been maintaining its operation. Now I am busy with trying more innovation and creation with computer technologies I have seized—innovation and creation should be permanent features of computer science; a qualified CS professional should be a proactive creator and developer of new technology.

In order to continually perfect my expertise I also chose practice in workplace and entered App Annie in June 2020 as a Productivity Engineering Intern. My duties were developing and maintaining the DevOps toolchain of all departments which enabled me to experience the workflow of agile development and known the communication mode between teams. More importantly thanks to the plentiful projects in the department I could touch such technologies as Jenkins and Docker that keenly interested me. My trouble-solving abilities got strengthened as well. By checking a multitude of documents of Firefox and Chrome designing a browser extension used by the Sales and Front-end departments I succeeded in conquering the problems about compatibility and cache performance. As my efforts earned praise from the head of the front-end development team I already resolved to further accumulate first-hand work experience through such internships in my senior year.

As mentioned above CS majors must bring innovative changes to computer science. In order for this during graduate study I hope to deepen my understanding of cutting-edge technologies especially those about distributed systems and computer security; my professional and personal capabilities should be simultaneously strengthened in several aspects including doing independent scientific research abstracting mathematical models from practical problems combining my knowledge and skills with real working scenarios etc. Besides my creative thinking should be further sharpened to help me extend or transform existing thoughts and conceive a unique and complete framework for new technologydevelopment or problem solving. As long as I am sufficiently prepared in the above aspects plus my fortified expertise in Computer Science I believe I will create new and feasible computer technologies to benefit people.

When I was looking for the best platform for my graduate degree MSc the Computing (Software Engineering) programme of Imperial College London caught my attention. On your school’s official website I found that the research areas of the programme involve distributed algorithms and distributed corpora which is what I would like to study in depth at the graduate level. In addition I could also delve into artificial intelligence and machine learning. As I mentioned above I still have a great interest in these areas and I hope to make a breakthrough in these areas of research once I have mastered strong math and logic. Your university can provide me with the guidance of excellent professors and a wealth of academic resources and with my undergraduate academic background I am confident that I can contribute my share to the field of software engineering in computer science by leveraging expertise and skills acquired. I may work as a computer engineer in a large-scale computer technology company after graduation. I also hope sincerely your first-rate career service will help me further specify my long-range career planning. I am extremely eager to complete my postgraduate degree at your university and sincerely request that you give me an opportunity to do so.
