(1/6)Stratford-on-Avon as we all know has only one industry---William Shakespeare---but there are two distinctly separate and increasingly hostile branches. There is the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) which presents superb productions of the plays at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre on the Avon. And there are the townsfolk who largely live off the tourists who come not to see the plays but to look at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage Shakespeare’s birthplace and the other sights.
(2/6)The worthy residents of Stratford doubt that the theatre adds a penny to their revenue. They frankly dislike the RSC’s actors them with their long hair and beards and sandals and noisiness. It’s all deliciously ironic when you consider that Shakespeare who earns their living was himself an actor (with a beard) and did his share of noise- making.-Stratford的当地乡绅们都质疑剧院有没有为当地的税收收入做一点贡献。
(3/6)The tourist streams are not entirely separate. The sightseers who come by bus---and often take in Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace on the side---don’t usually see the plays and some of them are even surprised to find a theatre in Stratford. However the playgoers do manage a little sight --- seeing along with their play---going. It is the playgoers the RSC contends who bring in much of the town’s revenue because they spend the night (some of them four or five nights) pouring cash into the hotels and restaurants. The sightseers can take in everything and get out of town by nightfall.(Translation)-游客群并不是完全分开的。
(4/6)The townsfolk don’t see it this way and local council does not contribute directly to the subsidy of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Stratford cries poor traditionally. Nevertheless every hotel in town seems to be adding a new wing or cocktail lounge. Hilton is building its own hotel there which you may be sure will be decorated with Hamlet Hamburger Bars the Lear Lounge the Banquo Banqueting Room and so forth and will be very expensive.-当地居民并不这么认为,地方政府也没有直接给予RSC补贴。
(5/6)Anyway the townsfolk can’t understand why the Royal Shakespeare Company needs a subsidy. (The theatre has broken attendance records for three years in a row. Last year its 1 431 seats were 94 per cent occupied all year long and this year they’ll do better.) The reason of course is that costs have rocketed and ticket prices have stayed low.-总之,居民不明白为什么RSC需要补贴。
(6/6)It would be a shame to raise prices too much because it would drive away the young people who are Stratford’s most attractive clientele. They come entirely for the plays not the sights. They all seem to look alike (though they come from all over)–lean pointed dedicated faces wearing jeans and sandals eating their buns and bedding down for the night on the flagstones outside the theatre to buy the 20 seats and 80 standing-room tickets held for the sleepers and sold to them when the box office opens at 10:30 a.m.-大幅增加票价是一件很为难的事情,因为这样会把Stratford的最有魅力的顾客-年轻人赶走。

第一段说明莎士比亚小镇的两个群体的分歧。后面也是围绕RSC和小镇居民的矛盾分析;

第二段说明小镇居民认为RSC不能带来收入,也讨厌那些演员。注意最后一句的语气,作者是一种讽刺口吻;

第三段站在RSC的一边反驳,这些看戏的游客带来收入;

第四段又站在小镇居民的立场,不这么认为。但是他们也利用莎士比亚增加收入;

第五段说明小镇居民另外一个反对RSC的说法,不理解为什么需要补贴。最后一句解释是因为演戏成本上升;

Have a Hamlet Hamberger At the Hilton。 Shakespeare's birthplace says no to plays.

1.And there are the townsfolk who largely live off the tourists who come not to see the plays but to look at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage Shakespeare’s birthplace and the other sights.

【分析】who引导定语从句修饰townsfolk,not… but 结构的意思是不是…

2.They all seem to look alike (though they come from all over)---lean pointed dedicated faces wearing jeans and sandals eating their buns and bedding down for the night on the flagstones outside the theatre to buy the 20 seats and 80 standing—room tickets held for the sleepers and sold to them when the box office opens at 10:30 a.m.

Held for 以及sold to 分别引导两个分词结构修饰tickets。

26. From the first two paragraphs we learn that____A. the townsfolk deny the RSC‘s contribution to the town’s revenueB. the actors of the RSC imitate Shakespeare on and off stageC. the two branches of the RSC are not on good termsD. the townsfolk earn little from tourism26.
The worthy residents of Stratford doubt that the theatre adds a penny to their revenue可明显看出,居民们怀疑剧院是否对收入作出一点贡献。 And there are the townsfolk who largely live off the tourists who come。
27.It can be inferred from Paragragh 3 that____A. the sightseers cannot visit the Castle and the Palace separatelyB. the playgoers spend more money than the sightseersC. the sightseers do more shopping than the playgoersD. the playgoers go to no other places in town than the theater27.
The sightseers who come by bus- and often take in Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace on the side这句话。 It is the playgoers the ESC contends who bring in much of the town’s revenue because they spend the night可以看出,看戏的人对城镇的收入贡献最大。 However the playgoers do manage a little sight-seeing along with their playgoing.
28.By saying “Stratford cries poor traditionally”(Line 2-3 Paragraph 4) the author implies that____ A. Stratford cannot afford the expansion projectsB. Stratford has long been in financial difficultiesC. the town is not really short of moneyD. the townsfolk used to be poorly paid28.
【答案】C【考点】词义句意题【解析】由题目定位到所指原句--- will be very expensive.
29.According to the townsfolk the RSC deserves no subsidy because____A. ticket prices can be raised to cover the spendingB. the company is financially ill-managedC. the behavior of the actors is not socially acceptableD. the theatre attendance is on the rise29.
The theatre has broken attendance records for three years in a row. Last year its 1 431 seats were 94 percent occupied all year long and this year they’ll do better. 。
30.From the text we can conclude that the author___A. is supportive of both sidesB. favors the townsfolk’s viewC. takes a detached attitudeD. is sympathetic to the RSC30.
