正如美国网站Quartzy报道所言，金庸先生笔下的世界颂扬忠诚、勇气和个人在腐化集权下的胜利，而这样的世界正基于江湖英雄：或在丛林间穿梭，或一指让敌人毙命。
"The world imagined by Chinese writer Jin Yong is one which celebrates loyalty courage and the triumph of the individual over a corrupt and authoritarian state – carried out by no less than heroes who fly through trees and deliver deadly blows to their enemies with a single finger."
庞大的著作，头疼的翻译 How does one translate the basic elements of the series?
“打狗棒法”、“降龙十八掌”、“九阴白骨爪”、“碧海潮生曲”……乍看上去让人毫无翻译头绪。网友曾给出如下画风清奇的答案：
作为本卷的译者，瑞典姑娘安娜•霍姆伍德（Anna Holmwood，中文名郝玉青），同时采取了音译和意译两种方法，试图在其中找到平衡以契合中文原著中暗藏深意的人物名字。譬如郭靖和杨康都采用音译的Guo Jing和Yang Kang，但其他诸多人物就不同了。

武功中家喻户晓的招式“降龙十八掌”是The 18 palm attacks to defeat dragons（击败龙的十八掌），“九阴白骨爪”是Nine Yin Skeleton Claw（九阴骷髅爪）。据BBC中文报道，郝玉青选用骷髅（skeleton）一词代替白骨（bone）来翻译这一经典招式，是因为金庸笔下对“九阴白骨爪”最突出的展示是骷髅头盖骨上正好能插入五根手指的五个洞。
The book however is a huge challenge for translators largely due to the mind-blowing world based on Chinese historical background that Jin Yong created as well as the specific culture and names of martial arts moves and characters. Anna Holmwood translated the first volume in the series. Despite being a fan of Chinese classical poetry and literature it took Holmwood years to finish the 400-page translation.
郝玉青的父亲是英国人，母亲是瑞典人，本人在英国长大，后在牛津大学读历史专业。十余年前，20岁出头的她独自到中国游学。这次旅行触动了她想要学习中文的初心，而后花了3年多时间在牛津大学等高校学习中文专业、研读中国文学和历史。在好友的推荐下，她迷上了金庸的武侠小说，喜欢上了这种“不落窠臼、充满创造力和想象力的作品，”成为了一个地道的金庸迷。
Holmwood is a professional translator focused on Chinese-English literary translation. Along with studying history and Chinese she spent many years living in China. She has also translated "Under the Hawthorn Tree" (山楂树之恋) and many other short stories.
From searching for a book agent to publishing the final translation Holmwood spent nearly six years on the book. She first recommended Jin Yong's novels to an agent in 2012 and took more than a year to translate the first volume of the series.
"It was mainly because of the quality of the writing and also because of his status in Chinese culture. The publisher in Britain was very excited to see there was such a big beloved author who still hadn't been translated into English at least not by a trade publisher " Holmwood told Xinhua.
一石激起千层浪，网友喜忧参半 Netizens review the book's translation
《射雕英雄传》英译本的出版在国外论坛Reddit也掀起了激烈的讨论，热度居高不下。一些外国网友被标题中的“中国版《魔戒》”深深吸引，表达了浓厚的阅读兴趣。

英译本也引起了国内网友的关注。有人称赞翻译“666”，还把中国文学带给海外读者；也有人表达对译文的不满，担忧这样翻译是否能真正让外国受众读懂。
Holmwood's translation has received both praise and criticism from people on Chinese social media. Some said the act of translating a Chinese novel into English was good for learning about each other's cultures while others thought that much of the original meaning had been lost in translation.
金庸著作难译，是公认的事实。他独特的“金庸体”语言半文半白间杂律诗，四字格和成语典故比比皆是。除了语言独特，其文化韵味丰富，意境也难以捉摸。
波士顿大学比较文学系教授Petrus Liu曾在Quartzy报道中说：
"Translating Jin Yong is often a daunting task because of the complexity of his language which integrates prose and poetry and makes extensive use of 'four-character phrases' and other Chinese idioms in order to recreate the 'feel' of traditional Chinese vernacular novels " Petrus Liu associate professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Boston University told Quartzy.
瑞典姑娘郝玉青为何敢于翻译这部巨著？
在译本的序中，她是这样解释自己翻译《射雕英雄传》的初衷：译难；不译，则是更大的损失。
"Many considered Jin Yong's world too foreign too Chinese for an English-speaking readership. Impossible to translate. And yet this story of love loyalty honor and the power of the individual against successive corrupt governments and invading forces is as universal as any story could hope to be. The greatest loss that can occur in translation can only come from not translating at all."
在翻译《射雕英雄传》的过程中，紧张在所难免，但如她所言，始终“怀着一颗谦卑的心”来完成这件事。对郝玉青而言，翻译中“字字对应”不是自己的追求， “就像金庸自己在向读者用英文讲述故事一般”流畅达意的效果才是目标。她曾坦言武功招数的名称并不是最难翻译的部分，“最困难的部分是如何让这些武功招数打得流畅。”
Translating such a popular novel comes with a huge amount of pressure. Holmwood admitted the project made her nervous so she took on the task with a humble heart. For Holmwood translation is not just about making sure that it is accurate or correct in a word-for-word sense but she also wanted to make sure English readers would be to experience the novel in the same way Chinese readers have.
即便你没看过武侠小说，想必也熟悉这两个经常出现的词汇：江湖（武林）、侠。为了让读者更好地理解书中内容，郝玉青在译本序中对这两个富含文化意蕴的概念做了充分的解释：
"Men and women who have trained for years in the martial arts name themselves for the symbolic landscape of rivers and lakes that is their home the jianghu or even the "martial forest" the wulin."
"Organised into sects schools clans and bands of sworn brothers or even travelling as lone "wanderers of the lakes and rivers" they live by a moral code they call xia."
正如郝玉青所言，金庸的作品会是一个良好的开端，能促进更多相关作品被翻译介绍给海外读者，感受中国武侠世界的江湖情仇。
有朝一日， “飞雪连天射白鹿，笑书神侠倚碧鸳”可以被更多海外读者知晓。
Holmwood told Xinhua that Chinese martial arts novels have potential in the English language book market. The translator's responsibility is to create new dialogue arouse people's interest and spark discussion she added.
