木星是太阳系从太阳向外的第五颗行星,并且是最大的行星。古代的天文学家就已经知道这颗行星,罗马人以他们的神称这颗行星为朱庇特。古代中国则称木星为岁星,取其绕行天球一周为12年,与地支相同之故。木星拥有69颗已确认的天然卫星,是太阳系内拥有最大卫星系统的行星。[1][2]当中最大的4颗,统称伽利略卫星,由伽利略于1610年发现,这是首次(除了月球)发现不是围绕太阳的天体。19世纪末起,越来越多更小型的木星卫星被发现,并命名为罗马神话中的诸神之王朱庇特(或同等的宙斯)的各位情人、倾慕者和女儿。
木星的卫星之中有8颗属于规则卫星,它们沿几乎呈正圆的顺行轨道公转,轨道相对木星的赤道面倾斜度近乎零。4颗伽利略卫星的质量最大,足以形成近球体形状。其余4颗规则卫星的体积则小得多,轨道更接近木星,是木星环尘埃的主要来源。剩余的卫星都属于不规则卫星,它们分别有顺行和逆行轨道,距离木星较远,轨道倾角和离心率都非常高。这类卫星都很可能曾经围绕太阳公转,之后被木星所捕获的天体。自2003年以来,共有17颗已发现但未命名的不规则卫星。
