他的坚定是实实在在的，主意也不是轻而易举的：他可不是那种注定要使生活简单，逐走一切不该进入自己小圈子的事物的人。恰恰相反，他有着每次接触新东西时都变得生动活跃的信念，时刻准备攀上更高的水平。

他的话不管多么生硬，都出自一颗慷慨仁慈的心，是为真理而发。开放精神使他完全同意有各种各样达到真理的办法，承认有时与他根本对立的研究的合法性。但是，在艺术上，一如在生活中，他始终与野心家，伪善者，拍马者，自命不凡者誓不两立。斗争是他生活的一部分，艺术斗争也如社会斗争一样，因为他似乎有更多的精力要提供给渴望行动的坚强气质使用。
