“六公园英语角”是杭州最大的市民英语角，每到周六，从杭城的四面八方赶来的学习外语者，聚集在西湖边六公园学习外语。从改革开放初，直到现在已有30多年的历史。

英语角让许多人圆了梦

来英语角的青少年大部分有出国梦。陶俊达就是其中的一个，那年他17岁，高中生，打算出国留学，便决心到西湖边英语角练口语，可他胆怯，不敢独闯英语角，便约了几个同学一起来。以后几次，他渐渐克服了胆怯心理，用英文和人交流起来。随着英语水平的提升，他终于实现梦想，去新加坡求学。回国后，在一家颇有名气的外语培训学校工作。

杭州不断走向国际化。30多年来，外资企业不断增加，涉外业务也越来越多，对外语人才的需求也越来越大。英语角变成了外语角，人们不光来这里交流英语，还交流德语、法语、俄语、日语。

周麒年大学毕业后在杭州一家德资企业工作。他不光勤奋学习英语，还学习德语。在英语角，他见到英语国家的人就讲英语，见了德国人便用德语交流，双语并用，十分快乐。

在英语角的人群中，有部分人年纪比较大，但学习的热情不亚于年轻人。出租车司机李大伟，57岁之前从未学过英语，去英语角学英语时，从26个字母和简单句子学起，逐字逐句向人请教，回家后反复练习。退休后，他更是集中精力学习英语。日复一日，年复一年，十多年下来，他的英语水平大有提高。3年前独自游历越南、不丹，去年独自去俄罗斯游历了一个月，凭借在英语角学的口语，在异国一路畅通。

2003年，外文书店因道路改造，迁址凤起路，但对英语角毫无影响，而且人数越来越多，最多时达四五百人。杭州市政府也在六公园建了青铜像——两个青年靠在一起，阅读英语报纸，另有两个中国青年和一个外国青年交谈，生动反映了当初的情景。

现在，凤起路的外文书店、滨江的杭州图书馆举办英语角，全市英语角达7处之多，但六公园外语角仍扮演主要角色。

30多年来，数万计的市民从这里起步，出国留学、经商、旅游等，也有许多外国人通过英语角的交流，了解杭州，选择留杭工作。还有外国友人在英语角和杭州青年相识相恋，走进婚姻殿堂。

美国小伙贾斯汀在浙江大学学中文时，常来六公园英语角交流，与杭州女青年小朱相识后喜结良缘。他们没有忘记英语角的恩情，婚礼后就来英语角分发喜糖。那天，英语角特别热闹，祝贺声、欢笑声，汇成一片。

There are many like me who have benefited from the English Corner and have become a better speaker. Ten years ago the 17-year-old Tao Junda first came to the corner and met Jonna an English teacher in Hangzhou. Tao later studied in Singapore for seven years. Now he is teaching English in Hangzhou.

As Hangzhou is becoming increasingly international the English Corner has long since become a corner of multiple languages. People here speak Russian German French and Japanese now and then. And the corner attracts people from all walks of life and of all ages. Li Dawei a taxi driver came to the corner more than ten years ago. He knew little English. Gradually his English improved. Three years ago he visited Vietnam and Bhutan alone and survived with the English he picked up at the corner. Last year he did sightseeing in Russia. He spoke English and didn’t find it too difficult to communicate with foreigners.

It is an urban myth how the English Corner in Park Six came into existence. Versions differ but most people agree that the origin of the corner was closely associated with the foreign languages bookstore nearby. The bookstore has relocated years ago. The site is now marked by a statue of Marco Polo. Back then the bookstore was the only place in the city that sold books and magazines from foreign countries. As China opened its door to the outside world in the 1980s the bookstore attracted local residents on Sundays. Many young people bought books at the bookstore and came to the park to read. Gradually the English Corner came into being.

In 2003 the bookstore relocated to Fengqi Road making room for a road expansion project. The relocation didn’t affect the corner. More and more people came to the corner. Sometimes there are four or five hundreds of people. A set of bronze statues now stands at the park to mark the corner.

Nowadays there are seven other English corners across the city including at the one foreign language bookstore on Fengqi Road and one at Hangzhou Library in Binjiang District. However the corner in Park Six still plays a big part in the local English learning. Over the past three decades and more the English Corner has been more than a place where people talk and communicate in foreign languages. It acts as a social club where people meet each other. Friendship forms and thickens and love happens and leads to marriages. Thousands of English speakers have benefited from the corner.
