如果你听到小伙伴说“Shanxi”，你的第一反应是“陕西”还是“山西”呢？如果不是本地人，就很容易混淆这两个省份，如果你想用英文表达这两个地方，都读作“Shanxi”，那别人就更不理解你说的是哪个地方了。
陕西 ≠ Shanxi
按照直译法来看，把“陕西”译为“Shanxi”是没有什么问题的，但是我们还有一个“山西”，“陕西”并不等于“山西”，所以为了区分这两个省份，两者的英文也做了区分：

在国外看到“Xian”千万不要高兴的翻译为西安，因为国外大部分信仰基督教，所以Xian在英语中是基督教徒的缩写。

正确表达：西安 = Xi'an

同汉语拼音，英文字母大小写区别：
上海 ≠ shanghai
上海 Shanghai（√） ['ʃæŋhai; 'ʃæŋ'hai]
小写的“上海”和大写的“上海”的意思也是千差万别呢！
那小写的“shanghai”是什么意思呢？
1. (以暴力或不正当手段 )劫掠(某人)去作水手
2. (以武力或武力威胁)强行拘留；诱拐
He was shanghaied.
他被骗了。（千万不要理解成“他是上海人”）
turkey ≠ 土耳其
如果你不小心把“土耳其”写成了“turkey” 那就会让人产生误会，那你就不是去浪漫的“土耳其”旅行了，而是吃“火鸡”了，这两种画风完全不一样。

注：专名中同一个汉字有不同的读音和拼写，据笔者不完全统计，地名中这样的汉字有七八十个之多，每个字在地名中的读音和拼写是固定的，英译者不能一见汉字就按语言词典的读音和拼写翻译，而只能按中国地名词典的读音和拼写进行翻译。
