Robert Adams
American photographer who has focused on the changing landscape of the American West. His work first came to prominence in the mid-1970s through his book The New West (1974) and his participation in the exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape in 1975. He has received two Guggenheim Fellowships a MacArthur Fellowship the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the Hasselblad Award.
ARTISTS sometimes claim that they work without thought of an audience that they make pictures just for themselves. We are not deceived. The only reward worth that much effort is a response and if no one pays attention or if the artist cannot live on hope then he or she is lost.
Artists and collectors have occasionally ragged each other a little with Daumier sketching connoisseurs as poseurs and buyers sometimes calling artists children. But the truth is that collectors and artists are in their strengths and weaknesses much alike and their squabbles if any are minor compared to their need of each other.

The most obvious characteristic they share is the nature and extent of their appetite. Whereas most people think of art as something inessential when compared say to food collectors and artists have been known to try to make a meal of pictures. The abstract greenery in William Henry Fox Talbot's Lace Pattern for example could almost be to hear them tell it as nourishing as produce from the market.
Collectors share with artists a narrow but intense sensualism. The opportunity for this in photography might at first seem limited but in fact an enjoyment of photographs is stronger for the subtle distinctions involved. Even tiny prints by Stieglitz can despite being limited to black and white make you a hedonist.
D. H. Lawrence no stranger to matters of pleasure observed that the profoundest of all sensualities is the sense of truth. Perhaps that explains another attribute shared by collectors and artists - self-confidence. None believes in democratic methods for judging art. None has ever held the slightest suspicion that a majority of people recognize the best art a majority of the time.
Collectors and artists respect this quality in each other.
The painter John Constable lamented one timid potential buyer as " full of objections. A good undoer but little of a doer. " Artists admire collectors who are doers people who like themselves are willing to take risks in an effort to build new syntheses. Samuel Johnson defined a collector as " he that collects scattered things together " suggesting the creative nature of the activity - assembling a new unity from what had before seemed disconnected and therefore without meaning. Just as the artist tries to bring varied aspects of life into a new harmony within one frame so the collector often gathers and exhibits pictures together for the satisfaction of observing fresh relationships among different views and artists and even entire periods of art.
The ultimate goal of both collector and artist is to make something whole and clear something that will help us all. The motive for doing this however is initially personal: As the painter Robert Henri said " In no work will you find the final word nor will you find a receipt that will just fit you. The fun of living " -and of making pictures and of collecting them- " is that we have to make ourselves. "
