He has received two Guggenheim Fellowships a MacArthur Fellowship the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the Hasselblad Award.

The most obvious characteristic they share is the nature and extent of their appetite. Whereas most people think of art as something inessential when compared say to food collectors and artists have been known to try to make a meal of pictures. Just as the artist tries to bring varied aspects of life into a new harmony within one frame so the collector often gathers and exhibits pictures together for the satisfaction of observing fresh relationships among different views and artists and even entire periods of art.
