(2003)
Wild Flowers on the Plateau
I would bring up so many prettylittle girls for anyone
I would relocate my motherland
Here where I would
Never be a cynic
Like the stream of unknown origin
I would shed streams of tears all day long to express
I surely would
Be an old father with hair disheveled
Translated by Shu Dandan
(2005)
Terminator
I will not fall in love with anybody else since loving you no never again
After loving you I will spend my remaining years in comfort relearn to keep calm
A river bends at your ankles you know where the answer
Lies you know all the spray is doomed to die away
Collapsing as the dike Iwill also turn into a dustpan a spade or
Sweat and tears on your cheek
After loving me you will become the woman among women
With so many children around the knees so many stars in the sky
The river in uproar the dead spindrift reviving
The dead underground like me will also shift their ankle bones lightly
Translated by Shu Dandan
(2012)
If a Root Can Speak
If a root can speak
It will speak of darkness first then light
It will tell you there is no country in darkness
No distinction between you and me in light
Here moist there dry
An earthworm spends half a life to pass through a lonely tomb
While an ant climbs to the treetop only for a leaf bud
If a root can speak
It will say underground is better than the earth
The dead mother still lives
She is eleven this year
I only saw her once for eleven years
If the root keeps on speaking
It will speak of the boy I once sitting under the tree
Carrying a shovel dug the earth
Gently
Translated by Shu Dandan
(2013)
Holly
I slept on a holly overnight
When I was five
Driven by my father onto the holly
I hugged the trunk and sang a while
Birds flapping in the bamboo grove at night
When I calmed down they calmed down too
We were all in silence
Only the moon walking in the sky
Only mother leaning against the doorframe and weeping
Translated by Shu Dandan
(2013)
When the Rainbow Appears
After the pine trees are showered the pine needles are bright
The muddy river flows like a length of shorts
The road tramping over the mountain
While the mountain is climbing
A throstle twittering by the ditch
A drongo responding on the telephone pole
On one side of the pine forest were pine trees
On the other side a crowd of people standing in arc light
Besides the pine trees
They tilt their heads skyward
The livestock behind them tilt their heads likewise
(1990)
Confetti
I see a little girl
who has two sweet eyes
I see these two pieces
of candies:
The genuine and pure ones
I am relieved
to see the children
sharing candies in the sunshine
and their sweetness
is a summary of human labour as a whole
which deserves high praises
and affirmation
They are inlaid in our lives
like stars
set in the high sky
We have sweated blood
only resulting in
being capable of enjoying
that primary juice of life
I see the little girl behind confetti
grown up in her dreaming
recognizing
the Happiness in her honey dreamland
and her beloved in the fields of sugarcane
and the buds on the confetti
upon which the honeybees might rest
are our former residence
I write down your name on the confetti
my beloved girl
dreaming of a poem of eternity
that can give birth to the one
the most beautiful infant
for the whole kind of human beings
Translated by Li Yiliang
Why We Grind
I went to ask a peasant
"Where is your fatherland?"
I was used to hearing his groan.
While him groaning I got close to him
helping him with grinding his grains
While the grinder rotating back and forth
I raised him such a question
"Had you ever thought of it?"
But a peasant as he was.I ever thought
helping him abandon his grinder
only to find not knowning
how to make grains into rice
Grinder always turns.
No one could stop its full rotation.
Even stones have learnt to gnash its teeth
Even I have become as iron-hearted as the grinderstone.
Translated by Li Yiliang
(2013)
A Summer Scene
Must be the cicadascalling after the frogs
They know to returnthe forest to quietude
Looking out
All you can see areconjoined twins:
Peach and paech andpeach
Sour and sweet…
Further away
Yellow wheatfields green bamboo leaves
Storm clouds crossedthe mountains
Storm clouds tumbleddown the slopes
Some mouths surfacein the pond
They are fishes’kisses
Tender butsimultaneously despairing
As though it’s adream sequence
It must be thestones crumbling down
Instead of an approachingrainstorm
People vistingrelatives find themselves facing them head-on
Translated by Tammy Ho
(2012)
Seen In a Disused Courtyard
Pumpkin vines refuseto press on after August
White hairs grow onfat leaves
This pumpkin floweris about to wither
That one is goingstrong
Pumpkin raises itsfists
Swears about yetanother wasted life
And I onceagain remember a childhood scene
Vivid thoughfictional
--Father hanging thevines branches with a stick
The pumpkins grewinto lanterns
So bright and soambiguous
Translated by Tammy Ho
(2013)
Rain Turned Snow
Three rolls of Spring thunder
One night of cold rain
I’ve often walk to the window to watch those
Flustered snowflakes
Thinking of them as the world’s most insignificantpeople
Drifting around crooked bodies
land and die
They desire to change fact but
mourn for a lack of strength to change
Like us knowing each other for this long
but still needing flash after flash oflightning
to be able to see where we stand
Translated by 韩任德
(Higginbottom Brendan Joseph)
(2014)
Say to her
I’ve thought of you
But most of the time I think of myself
Life half lived
Bearing sorrows
If there’s any gratitude that’d be a miracle
I’ve thought of cutting loose
Now and when hollow and empty life
Again compromises for stability revolvingmorals
I thought you could be like this too
Day after day
Negating oneself
Praising oneself
Finally adjusting to life without one another
(2014)
A Certain Smell
The smell of a newborn
The smell of simple flesh
Is the smell of chestnut retrieved from thefire
Heroes game and pass the torch in darkness
I’ve held you it was like
Holding all the world’s happiness and sorrow
I exerted all of my energy
Because I’m ignorant
I kissed you imparting the world’s hecticessence
There will be nothing sadder than our firstmeeting
