Part 1 questions

1. Do you like to cook?

Not really I’d have to say no. Most of the time I eat ready-to-eat meals and takeaways. That’s one of the reasons I love visiting my mum as I can always be guaranteed a lovely home-cooked meal. Nothing like home cooking right?

2. What time do you usually eat dinner?

I usually eat supper at around 7 pm. I’m usually starving by then and will have worked up quite an appetite so by that time I will either be in a local eatery or at home eating something easy like noodles.

3. Are there any types of food you don’t like?

No not really I’m not a fussy eater mind you I do hate eggs unless they are mixed in with tomatoes in a tomato egg dish but other than that I can pretty much eat anything.

  • worked up quite an appetite: 增加食欲
  • a local eatery: 本地小餐馆
  • fussy eater: 挑食的人

Part 2 task

Describe a restaurant that you like to use. You should say:

  • where this restaurant is
  • what kind of food it serves
  • how often you go there
  • and say why you like eating there so much.

A restaurant I like to frequent is just around the corner from where I live. It’s an Italian restaurant so as you’d expect there are various pasta dishes and pizzas to choose from but because I’m a student I can’t afford an expensive Italian meal so I usually have just a basic pizza but it’s very nice.

The restaurant is quite simple. From the outside it’s quite easy to miss as there are rows of trees in front of it and it’s easy to walk right past the front gate without even noticing that behind the trees is a restaurant. In that way it is kept quite local and I often see the same customers every time I go there. It’s in a 2 or 3-story building and is on the bottom floor.

The windows at the front of the restaurant are usually opened so whether you sit inside or out you can feel the atmosphere both inside and out in that way I’d say it’s kind of romantic I mean in the way that it gives me a feeling of being relaxed.

I like just taking my time to order eat and relax just watching the customers come in listening to the birds and that sort of thing. It’s really pleasant. Other than that I have to say it’s quite reasonably priced but as I mentioned I just usually settle for the basic pizza.

Once and a while I will also have a beer with my pizza especially if I go there with friends so in a way this little restaurant has become a sort of hang out for me and my friends about once a month.

  • just around the corner: 就在附近
  • easy to miss: 很容易错过
  • in that way: 那样一来
  • Once and a while: 时不时
  • in a way: 从某种程度上说

Part 3 questions

How can we encourage people to eat more healthily?

I think the best approach is to teach moderation. Processed food won’t kill you if you only eat it occasionally but people should also be encouraged to eat a balanced diet. Try to cook fresh ingredients at home a few times a week.

I think these ideas of how to eat properly though should start at a young age and I think schools should also teach something about nutrition. I suppose healthy eating campaigns by the government can have some success but adults are difficult to change so I think the best way to encourage people is to start when they are young.

  • a balanced diet: 均衡饮食

Do you think people enjoy their food as much as they should?

I don’t know really. It’s a difficult question to answer but off the top of my head I suppose people today will often eat a quick snack because they are rushed for time.

Come to think of it I often see people eating breakfast on the go in the morning you know they have a bun in their mouth as they are quickly walking to work. For dinner though I think most people do enjoy their food without wolfing it down.

  • off the top of my head
  • I suppose
  • come to think of it 细想一下;仔细想想
  • on the go 忙碌的
  • wolf it down 狼吞虎咽

Do you think cooking is a pleasure or a chore for people who have busy lives?

I think in this day and age most people consider it a chore including myself. I think this trend is not good though as people should know how to cook and second I think it kind of says something about the society we live in you know we are all busy trying to get things done making money working etcetera so because of that cooking is like something that has to be done rather than something that is to be enjoyed.

You know we often see in movies and on TV people enjoying their kitchen but in reality grocery shopping and then cooking well it takes a lot of time so I think in the minds of most it is just something that has to be done.

  • in this day and age
  • but in reality 但在现实中
  • in the minds of most 在大多数人的心目中
