Dursley sat frozen in his armchair. Shooting stars all over Britain? Owls flying by daylight? Mysterious people in cloaks all over the place? And a whisper a whisper about the Potters…
Mrs. Dursley came into the living room carrying two cups of tea. It was no good. He'd have to say something to her. He cleared his throat nervously. “Er — Petunia dear — you haven't heard from your sister lately have you?”
As he had expected Mrs. Dursley looked shocked and angry. After all they normally pretended she didn't have a sister.
“No ” she said sharply. “Why?”
“Funny stuff on the news ” Mr. Dursley mumbled. “Owls… shooting stars… and There were a lot of funny-looking people in town today…”
“So?” snapped Mrs. Dursley.
“Well I just thought… maybe… it was something to do with… you know… her crowd.”
Mrs. Dursley sipped her tea through pursed lips. Mr. Dursley wondered whether he dared tell her he'd heard the name “Potter.” He decided he didn't dare. Instead he said as casually as he could “Their son — he'd be about Dudley's age now wouldn't he?”
“I suppose so ” said Mrs. Dursley stiffly.
“What's his name again? Howard isn't it?”
“Harry. Nasty common name if you ask me.”
“Oh yes ” said Mr. Dursley his heart sinking horribly. “Yes I quite agree.”
Mr. Dursley sat frozen in his armchair.
Mr. Dursley
armchair,名词,指“扶手椅”(a comfortable chair with sides that support your arms)。
armchair
补充一下sit in the chair和sit on the chair的区别:
简单地说,sit in后接的是坐下可以陷进去的沙发,软床等。而sit on后接的则是坐下不会陷进去的板凳,台阶等。
“Funny stuff on the news ” Mr. Dursley mumbled.
mumble,及物或不及物动词,指“含糊地说,咕哝”(to speak quietly and in a way that is not clear so that the words are difficult to understand)。
例:She mumbled something about being too busy.
“So?” snapped Mrs. Dursley.
snap([snp]),及物或不及物动词,指“厉声说,恶声恶气地说”(to say something suddenly in an angry way)。
例:"Well I hate you too!" she snapped. “哼,我也恨你!”她厉声说。
例:There's no need to snap at me - it's not my fault that you lost your wallet.
Mrs. Dursley sipped her tea through pursed lips.
Mrs. Dursley
sip([sp]),动词,指“呷,啜”(to drink taking only a very small amount at a time)。
This tea is very hot so sip it carefully.
purse做名词是指女式用的包包,但它做动词时却是指“撅(嘴)”(to bring your lips tightly together so that they form a rounded shape usually as an expression of disapproval)。
例:"I don't approve of that kind of language " she said pursing her lips. “我不赞成那样子说话,”她撅着嘴说。
Instead he said as casually as he could “Their son — he'd be about Dudley's age now wouldn't he?”
casually是causal的副词形式,而casual是指“非正式的,随便的”(not formal or not for a formal situation)。
例:Jean felt more comfortable in casual clothes.
How could you answer him so casually?
“I suppose so ” said Mrs. Dursley stiffly.
I suppose so 用来表达“犹豫或不情愿的同意” (used to express hesitant or reluctant agreement.)。
例:A: "It's starting to get dark out should we start heading home?"
B: "I suppose so."
stiffly([stf.li]),副词,指“生硬地,拘谨地”(in a way that is too formal)。
例:"I don't thinkthat it's anything to do with you " he said stiffly.“我认为这和你一点儿关系都没有,”他生硬地说。
Harry. Nasty common name if you ask me.
nasty([ns.ti]),形容词,指“糟糕的;令人不快的,让人讨厌的”(bad or very unpleasant)。
例:There's a nasty smell in here.
if you ask me则是指“我认为;依我看”(said when giving your opinion on something)。
例:If you ask me people should go on a training course before they become parents.
“Oh yes ” said Mr. Dursley his heart sinking horribly. “Yes I quite agree.”
sink([sk]),及物动词,指“落下,沉下;降低”(to (cause something or someone to) fall or move to a lower level)。
例:The sun glowed red as it sank slowly below the horizon.
注意,sink的过去时和过去式变化有两种形式,一是sank(英式英语常用这种),二是sunk(美式英语则习惯于这种)。
horribly,副词,指“可怕地;极糟糕地”(extremely especially in a very bad or unpleasant way)。
例:Their plans went horribly wrong.
