This bunch were whispering excitedly too and he couldn’t see a single collecting tin. “The Potters that’s right that’s what I heard —”
“— yes their son Harry —”
Mr. Dursley stopped dead. Fear flooded him. He looked back at the whisperers as if he wanted to say something to them but thought better of it.
He dashed back across the road hurried up to his office snapped at his secretary not to disturb him seized his telephone and had almost finished dialing his home number when he changed his mind. He put the receiver back down and stroked his mustache thinking … no he was being stupid. Potter wasn’t such an unusual name. He was sure there were lots of people called Potter who had a son called Harry. Come to think of it he wasn’t even sure his nephew was called Harry. He’d never even seen the boy. It might have been Harvey. Or Harold. There was no point in worrying Mrs. Dursley; she always got so upset at any mention of her sister. He didn’t blame her — if he’d had a sister like that … but all the same those people in cloaks …

Harry Potter第一章到此，终于有点意思，在这里，主角隐隐的出现了。

德思礼先生听到这只言片语，然后就stopped dead，千万不要字面理解，停下来死掉了。这里的dead，不是说一个人死掉了，在此它是一个副词，表示完全的、全然的，也就是他完全停了下来，猛的停了下来。他惊呆了，定在当场，心中的恐惧如洪水一般淹没了他。

他回头又看了看那些小声说话的人，仿佛他想要跟他们说些什么，但是考虑了一下又改变注意。也就是说德思礼原本想跟他们说说，问问有关哈利的事情，但他最后决定还是不要这样做，不说了。
thought better of it，think better of something表达不是将某事想得更好，而是想一想又改变了主意。

波特不是一个很不寻常的姓，蛮常见的，他很肯定有很多人都姓波特，who had a son called Harry，定语从句对，who在修饰前面的people（姓波特的人），他们会有一个叫哈利的儿子。他认为有很多姓波特的人，这些人中有人的一个儿子叫做哈利，毕竟Potter这个姓很常见，Harry这个名字就更常见了。
Come to think of it he wasn’t even sure his nephew was called Harry. He’d never even seen the boy.
Come to think of it，不是想一想，而是有种【这么一想，我仔细一想】的意思。
仔细一想，他甚至都不确定他的外甥真叫哈利，毕竟，他甚至都没见过这个男孩。
It might have been Harvey. Or Harold. There was no point in worrying Mrs. Dursley; she always got so upset at any mention of her sister.
（那个男孩）也有可能是叫Harvey ，甚至叫Harold也说不定。他又在说服自己，刚刚听到那一声什么Harry Potter，跟他没关系。
There was或者说there is no point in doing something是表示做某事没有意义，没有必要的。所以他现在认为没有必要让太太担心，每次一提到德思礼太太的妹妹，她就会很不开心，所以提都不能提。

德思礼先生不怪他太太，如果他自己有一个那样的妹妹（like that……），这话他没有继续说下去，但言下之意，如果他有一个那样的妹妹，他也不认，所以这两夫妻世界观很统一。
但是不管怎么说，那些穿着斗篷的人确实很奇怪（those people in cloaks …），让德思礼先生有点忧心，这里用了省略号，没有继续往下说，但肯定德思礼的思绪一直在这上面打转，他一直想着。
小结原本躲过了反常的猫头鹰，结果还是不能安宁，离开办公室出去买个面包的时间居然又碰到了那群穿着斗篷的人，更重要的是从这群人里面，听到了波特和哈利的名字，这是他们家的禁忌。德思礼的心中对此变得很不安，直接影响到下午的工作状态。
此外，罗琳的一路铺垫，直到此时，才透露出主角一点点的信息。
原版中译文若不是他在面包房附近又碰到那群批斗篷的入，他早就把他们忘了。他经过他们身边时，狠狠地瞪了他们一眼。他说不清这是为什么，只是觉得这些人让他心里别扭。这些人正嘁嘁喳喳，讲得起劲，但他连一只募捐箱也没有看见。当他拎着装在袋里的一只大油饼往回走，经过他们身边时，他们的话断断续续飘入他的耳鼓：“波特夫妇，不错，我正是听说—— ”
“—— 没错，他们的儿子，哈利—— ”
他突然停下脚步，恐惧万分。他回头朝窃窃私语的人群看了一眼，似乎想听他们说点什么，后来又改变了主意。
他冲到马路对面，回到办公室，厉声吩咐秘书不要打扰他，然后抓起话筒，刚要拨通家里的电话，临时又变了卦。他放下话筒，摸着胡须，琢磨起来..不，他太愚蠢了。波特并不是一个稀有的姓，肯定有许多人姓波特，而且有儿子叫哈利。想到这里，他甚至连自己的外甥是不是哈利都拿不定了。他甚至没见过这孩子，说不定叫哈维，或者叫哈罗德。没有必要让太太烦心，只要一提起她妹妹，她总是心烦意乱。他并不责怪她—— 要是他自己有一个那样的妹妹……可不管怎么说，这群披斗篷的人……
