I couldn't help but quote Tyrion lannister from the book 'Game of thrones' written by George R R Martin. This conversation follows when Tyrion was asked why he reads so much:
"I have a realistic grasp of my own strengths and weaknesses. My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword King Robert has his war hammer and I have my mind... and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge." Tyrion tapped the leather cover of the book. "That's why I read so much Jon Snow."

To quote George R R Martin
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one."

An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa got up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his book. One day the grandson asked "Grandpa! I try to read the book just like you but I don't understand it and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?"
The grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water."
The boy did as he was told but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said "You'll have to move a little faster next time " and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough " and he went out the door to watch the boy try again. At this point the boy knew it was impossible but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath he said "See Grandpa it's useless!"
"So you think it is useless?" the old man said "Look at the basket." The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean inside and out.
So that's what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything but when you read it you will be changed inside and out!!!
▼ Always carry a book
Wherever you go take a book with you. If there is a time when you have to wait (like at a doctor’s office or at the DMV) whip out your book and read. Great way to pass the time.
▼ Make a list
Make a list of all the great books you want to read. You can keep this in your journal in a pocket notebook on your personal home page on your personal Weibo wherever. Be sure to add to it whenever you hear about a good book online or in person. Keep a running list and cross out the ones you read.
▼ Record it
做记录
One of the best ways to form a habit is to record it. This record should not only has the title and author of the book you read but also if possible the start and end date of reading the book. Better yet write down your thoughts on the book. A few months later it's a great satisfaction to go back to the record and review your reading experience.
▼ Reduce time on the smartphone/computer
If you really want to read more try cutting back on your smartphone or computer consumption. This may be difficult for many people. Still every minute you reduce of Internet/smartphone you could use for reading. This could create hours of book reading time.
▼ Have a routine reading hour or reading day
If you turn off the TV or Internet in the evening you could have a set hour (perhaps just after dinner) when you and maybe all the members of your family read each night. Or you could do a reading day when you read for practically the whole day.
Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
Albert Camus: The Stranger
Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday; I can't be sure.
Charles Dickens: A Tale Of Two Cities
It was the best of times it was the worst of times it was the age of wisdom it was the age of foolishness it was the epoch of belief it was the epoch of incredulity it was the season of Light it was the season of Darkness it was the spring of hope it was the winter of despair we had everything before us we had nothing before us we were all going direct to Heaven we were all going direct the other way.
Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita
Lolita light of my life fire of my loins. My sin my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap at three on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.
Charlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre
There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering indeed in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed when there was no company dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre and a rain so penetrating that further out-door exercise was now out of the question.
Garcia Marquez: One Hundred Years of Solitude
Many years later as he faced the firing squad Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice. At that time Macondo was a village of twenty adobe houses built on the bank of a river of clear water that ran along a bed of polished stones which were white and enormous like prehistoric eggs.
